Hi sorry if this is going to sound confused or a bit daft. i seem to have picked up on a thread that resonators react differently with open tunings.....cone collapse on a single cone and very adaptable with a spider!?! I am looking to buy my first resonator and was considering the MM Blues for sale on the forum, now I am not so sure. I intend to play some slide, mostly fingers with open tunings ala Jack Rose etc. DGDGGD, DADFAD And I like the bite and sound of the metal resonator....
Any help would be super.
Many thanks

I would have thought that the MM blues would be ideal as your first reso. Tough guitar, I wouldn't worry about collapsed cones, many of the most popular open tunings put less strain on the guitar than standard.
Best wishes to you all, John

My MM Blues28 has been up to open E (EBEG#BE) using Newtone MM PB 13s strings a fair few times with no problems whatsoever.
Not sure who told you that spiders were more forgiving than single cones, but I think there might of been a whiff of carbon bibaxide in that post.
There are much more knowledgeable people on here who will give you chapter and verse.
Just my 2d. worth.

Many thanks Im glad I found this place after I had a reso for a while. I grew up seeing completely uninformed and isolated muscians making do and improvising whatever... I wouldnt worry too much about cone collapse from a tuning. Personally I like wood body guitars for piedmont country stuff and metal body guitars for delta. have fun ! j

That thread is about OMI dobros with a 10.5 inch biscuit cone, which weren't great by all accounts and were prone to collapsing. All of the MM guitars have a 9.5 inch biscuit cone which will be fine with those tunings.
