perhaps i'm wa-a-ay behind the curve on this, but was amazed how close Jimi's cover is to original release. about the onliest stand out differences are the solo cut-out from JH's version.
[much unlike "all along the watchtower" which wasn't even close to Dylan]
was impressive how close the acoustic original is in "vibe"* to the cover:

A musician I admire very much Willie Deville made " Hey Joe" a regular part of his set not only that but he sometimes included a blistering electric slide version of " Dust my Broom" worth a peek on youtube...full refund if not happy.

You've opened a veritable Pandora's box here MF. General opinion is that while Billy Roberts wrote 'Hey Joe' this was recorded post Hendrix. I'm inclined to agree.

I thought I just caught an ear flap full of the "Hendrix chord" (sic) close to the end. If that's the case then that song was more influential than it appears on the surface because Jimi really mined that chord.
Edit: just read Graeme's post properly so it could actually be the tail wagging the dog ...

Just listened to this on my tablet PC with crap speakers My view is that Billy Roberts may have written the song but this version is a straight note for note crib from Hendrix. The recording and sound quality smacks of modern digital times to me. To be blunt, I'd never heard of the man until this evening and I spent a lot of time in North Carolina which is where he hails from. Knowing the Carolina musos they would have been crowing about this years ago if this version is the original. The first version I heard all those decades ago was by Love on their first album, but that don't mean anything. Until I hear Billy Roberts date certified original demo, I'll not comment further.

I had never heard the so-called original before tonight either, but I do like it sung as a straight country song.

Hendrix does give Roberts writing credit on the first Experience LP...maybe Jimi heard Billy strum it in an NYC coffee house back in the day??

had no idea about possible cover2cover influence possibilities.
oops, my need a fresh baked retraction on post numero uno....
would explain why a hardcore Hendrix fan could have been unaware of this performance for so long.

I'm not having it. The phrasing of those guitar licks has got Hendrix written all over it. Hendrix was probably the most original and inventive guitarists of his time - or any time, for that matter. He had a flair for improvisation that I've never heard equalled (although Rory Gallagher came close). He also played numerous covers and he put his own unique twist on all of them - why would he treat this one any differently? And why on earth would a musician of his stature copy somebody else's song note for note, anyway? I don't even do that and I'm crap! This just doesn't add up.

I've just dug out my original first UK pressing Polydor single of Hendrix "Hey Joe" bought from WH Smith, High Wycombe the day it was released - the song composer credit is (Trad.arr.Hendrix) FWthat'sW. NB - 'Hey Joe' was NOT on the original UK 'Are You Experienced?' album.

Yup - but the Hendrix UK single was released 5 months before the US single release and a good nine months before the US release of the retracked 'Are You Experienced?' LP. Could explain the CYA bit in the USA.
