0001 is not a real serial number. Such a number would (if indeed ever) have been on a Tele type, possibly a Cabronita type with a scroll headstock? It's quite well established that "0001" is a marriage. I first became aware of it before David acquired it because the classic monochrome image of it was in Ken Achard and Craig Bentley's book "The History and Development of the American Guitar" and also in a smaller one written by Ken Achard just about Leo-types. The photo is credited to Seymour Duncan. Both books extremely well thumbed here. It's easy to buy four bolt neck plates from eBay. I have a set of 3/16" and 1/8' letter and number punches and a choice of hammers. Any takers? One would hope that the fellow with brain cells inversely proportional to spare cash would already know that, so yes slthough the cachet of the number is a draw, it's the provenance that seals the deal. For that much money I'm thinking Balmer perhaps?
On a similar vein, back in the 1970s (I think it may have been The Orange Shop along Tottenham Court Road) advertised a flamingo pink Strat serial number 00001 in the heady days of The Melody Maker classifieds, and "bigged it up" as Leo's own personal guitar. Hah! The same applies re serial numbers, but this time the ejits forgot that they were supposed to be four digit numbers. Even as a wide eyed Saturday neophyte and not even knowing what a Gibson Lester Double Cut was, I knew that Strat smelled as fishy as the flamingo's supper!
e&oe...

U$3.3 million - not bad for a 1969 Strat body and bridge plate. What price my all original ex Roy Bookbinder, PD owned and played 1931 Triolian then?

I didn't know your Triolian was Roy's. I bought a wood bodied Triolian from Roy in 1994.

It wasn't cheap, but it was great for me back then. My old friend, Buzz, worked at the original Orange shop in New Compton Street and then Denmark Street. Who would have thought that Orange would become a worldwide brand. Shine On Michael

The lucky buyer of the Black Strat was Jim Isrey who owns an NFL football team He already owns Jerry Garcia's "Wolf" guitar and an acoustic once owned by Elvis (amongst many others) as well as the Black Gilmour Strat he also purchased a flight case for it for $140,000 dollars and the "Wish You Were Here" Martin D 35 for $900,0000 dollars.

I’ve been laughing to myself all day over the contrast, I ducked out of bidding on a Kalamazoo last week at 1100 quid. Worried I would pay too much. The world went mad for a few hours
