I found this documentary to be a little disappointing, the same old celeb musicians spouting out the familiar blues cliches. You can almost 'cut and paste' any blues musician into this documentary and you would have another BBC 4 documentary..
I have to admit that I only watched half of it as it was starting to bore me.

I watched it this morning and while it didn't bore me, I do agree that it was just a cut & paste job with a few interviews thrown in. So many TV music documentaries are made this way. Many BBC 4 music docs' are made for a certain demographic and they are literally cut & pasted together by researchers. Stuff like "Stones at the BBC" "Metal at the BBC" etc... are also just cheap to make TV shows. BBC 4 music docs' are the TV equivalent to Mojo magazine here in the UK. Baby Boomers are their target audience.
The John Lee Hooker doc' was likely instigated by management to boost sales of albums. If that is shown in the US, the UK, Australia, Japan...etc, it will generate a lot of sales.
I enjoyed seeing Roy Rogers as I hadn't seen him for many years. Roy and his wife, Gaynell, are lovely people and spending time with them I got to hear some beautiful JLH anecdotes. Also Mike Kappus, as we were in touch about my cover of JJ Cale's Anyway The Wind Blows with Mitra. Mike is a very nice guy and has done a wonderful job with JLH's catalogue. He is now doing it with JJ Cale's too.
Having said all that, I have always loved JLH's music and I enjoyed wallowing in his world for an hour.

I didn't watch the documentary, but it reminded me of somebody I used to run with. He was an international marathon runner and businessman, with some interesting connections in the music world.
Years ago, he went to Chicago to run in the marathon, and stayed with John Lee Hooker. He said JLH was amazing to talk to and hear playing.

Hi Michael, all, Here in Nola I hear a lot of stories about Deceased muscians that are patently false or at least when I was there I never saw the events related. James Booker in particular... quite a character and sadly ill, people will freely relate events regarding Booker they know are true and yet they have no evidence other that being told a story. I worked at a club that many will tell me how much they enjoyed shows there without doing the math that would indicate they were 5 years old... I have even seen one show review done by a well respected writer who did not attend the show. Knowing myself and having played a mean hand of liars poker on a few occasions Id just like to relate something my Grandfather, Elvis Presley told me.... "give em something to talk about." As long as no one slanders negatively Im ok with the stories. Truth is what we believe... all best yall, jeff Ps. No Im not actually related to E other than our tastes in music and TCB. Ive worked on more than a few stories about Elvis and each reflects the personality and desires of the producers in some ways... not necessarily a good or bad thing. Teevee is made with the intent of resonating with the audience and sometimes panders to our base instinct... conversely it can inspire. Occasionally it informs.

I had to watch that twice and Im still not sure if its Beautiful or Evidence of the flashback I was warned about when I took that hit... irony is that tough guy leather wrapper usually indicates the kindest of hearts...

It took me a little while to tune in to what is effectively a song but set at the pace of poetry/performance art and it reminded me a little of Rainer who I am a big fan of so I get it and not everything is set to 12 bar blues.
and there is nothing wrong with a gawdy Gold guitar!!!

I watched the RJ doc on Netflix last night. Terrible. Cliche and myth and not much more. I’m surprised they didn’t have him throwing TVs out of hotel windows. Or phonographs out of Jukes. Zeke Schein was there. Maybe his photo was in his pocket as it didn’t make it onto screen....

I didn't even bother to watch the John Lee Hooker one.I knew at some point 'Slash' was bound to appear and explain to us mere mortals what made him (JLH that is) great. Anyway I don't trust people who wear sunglasses when it isn't sunny.

On the subject of your post, you forgot about people that wear long curly wigs attached to their hats. Shine On Michael
