I know some of you must get tired of Dobro related postings, so here's a National one. No really interesting story to go with this one though. I got this from Traditional Music in Encinitas California about 20 years ago. I traded in a rather sadly treated Style 1 tricone--if I recall, #1850--that had dings and dents and was crudely engraved "Al Cube". It sounded great, and I'd thought about adding an accent over the "e" and starting a group called AL CUBE (Cu-BAY) AND HIS BAND OF TODAY. However, when I saw this Style 1 1/2 I fell in love. I also traded in my early hollow metal Melobar (the type some feel the Dopyeras had some hand in making), a koa wood uke that had a similar grill pattern to a tricone, and some cash. At any rate, as you can see, it has a solid headstock as listed in the Brozman book--not a slotted one as listed in Mark's. One of the best features for me--a STEEL tailpiece...I could tell from the slight corrosion in the plating. "Bob! Do you have a magnet?" That was all I needed to push me over the edge--I'd had several of the brass ones give way over the years on different guitars.

That's a nice looking guitar. I am sure Mark will change the detail on his listing about it now he as seen the photos. As I am sure you are aware, much of the information and details related to serial numbers in the BB book were supplied by Mark. Sadly he was never properly credited or thanked.

Michael...somehow that doesn't surprise me...I sent serial numbers of my Nationals to Brozman, questions and comments, and the only thing I received in return was an ad for his Broz-o-Phonic steel bar!

Indeed! Let's not continue a conversation about him on here.
That is most unusual for Mark to have an error in his serial number listings, but as you can imagine it is almost impossible to have done this amount of research and listed so many instruments for there not to be one or two errors in the details. Your 1937 Tricone is listed as a slotted headstock 1,5 wiggle border instrument in the book, but I am sure that has already been changed for digital downloads and future editions.

B937 B937 from 1936 different Tuners to yours, yours remind me of the cast Aluminium lap steel tuners of the same era

Yes...my two 7 string aluminum Dobros have them and my Regal Dobro tenor (minus the original buttons--those pot metal buttons seldom hold up through the years) and they seem to also be the main ones found on the Rickenbacher steels from the same 1936-37 time period. Are your back plates the same shape, though?

I call her the 2-35 because of the headstock and fingerboard inlays.... like yours another anomaly from Nationals interesting past.

In 1988 I recorded a live session for BBC Radio 1 with that guitar. It was a feature on me and Steve Phillips. I probably still have it on a cassette somewhere.

It was Mark’s at the time. I borrowed it for a while. Here it is in 1987 behind me in this photo Photo by Alan Messer ©1987 Shine On Michael

Hi Michael, I got it from Colin Brooks when he was as living in his Camden Town flat. I had just picked it up when I came over to see you and Mike Cooper playing at South Hill park in Bracknell.
