Does anyone know what finish was used on the old National metal body guitars? Was it a gloss / semi-gloss / flat? I've stripped down a Regal to bare metal & not sure what to apply for protection from finger oils, oxidation, etc.

Just to clarify - if the guitar body wasn't plated with nickel or another metal; or were they all plated or painted?

Hi there !
In general (but with plenty of exceptions) :
German Silver metal bodies - nickel-plated, with or without engraving Brass metal bodies - nickel-plated, with or without etched pattern, (a few rare models had some enamel-paint added on parts of the etched pattern/scene -Style 35 & Style 97 Tricones) Steel bodies - early Style O models were nickel-plated, but almost all steel bodies (Euolians and Triolians) werepainted, type of paint mostly depends on model Wood bodies - painted, or stained and varnished

Hi resotone,
If you are going to use paint, you should start with a metal primer and use a matt or satin type of car spray paint. I am guessing it's a steel body or you probably wouldn't have stripped it?
Can we see some photos?

If you want the finish as-is and just want a protection layer then a couple of VERY thin BOILED linseed oil will do the trick nicely

Yes it will cure hard like a tru oil finish. Takes a while mind you. Weeks to fully harden

The Regal RC-43 ended up with a rattle can finish - first semi gloss, then satin, then gloss. The best looking finish (imho) was the satin, so the body got sprayed a final time in that. The guitar is back in action. With StewMac Golden Age tuners & the MM .016 - .059 strings -- rarin' to go! Thanks all for comments...
