MM---
Went back and proof read posting #1 again. You're right, sounds very caustic now that it has aged.
Was not my intentions to trash the Beach Boys, I thought they were a great band. Posted late at night [here] was done in haste as I had just heard “Surfer Dan” for first time in decades, and it impelled the thought.
Now that there is no rush, Good Vibrations was also one of my favorite tunes in their catalog, not mentioned because it didn't fit into the “formula” wave they surfed in upon.
boy + girl + hotrod + surf boards = top ten hit
Dunno what AM radio was like there in the '60's. Here play lists of “pop*” stations had a mechanical linkage to “billboard top 40” of the week. Sadly, most stations here were closer to an actual top 30 list with # 1 – 10 repeated hourly.
Was excruciating to hear saturation therapy regimen of their big $ hits of the early years like:
little deuce coupe...1932 ford vicky 2 door commonly stripped down to just the body shell with unreasonably powerful chevy engines replacing the “flat head” ford OEM offering.
409...cubic inch displacement of chevy big block engine
hey little cobra...AC Cobra, these were dangerous fast, very small, light cars. Truth is most people who actually raced them wanted the 289 CID engines over the 427 CID preferred by ~very brave~ stop light-to-light drag racers on the coast highway in Redondo Beach.
Later on, about “Pet Sounds” era, they dropped “the formula” format and started branching out into much better tuneage like:
And one that I feel cracked open the door for later vocal intensive bands like CSNY, and the Eagles, etc
“Their Hearts Were Full of Spring”--if I had to pick out one [only] song of theirs as a favorite this obscure tune would be it. Just shows to go ya, mitchfit's musical taste is well beyond the bank of “main stream”:
As far as posting #1, my opinion, the Beatles were paying homage, same for S&G. The Turtles song was a spoof.
I have a hard time wrapping my head around Flo and Eddie, reportedly chemically impaired playing for Richard Nixon's daughter at the white house.
[cracking the door open for Willie Nelson?]
ultimateclassicrock.com/turtles-white-house-concert-1970/Don't take this as me trashing them, please. The Turtles noteworthy songs IMHO include:
above mentioned Happy Together
She's My Girl
She'd Rather Be With Me
Me About You
You Know What I Mean
Lady-O
bonzo—
Most of their detractors here dissed them for just copying/filling in the void left from “Jan and Dean” when Jan Berry came within a hairs breadth of going prophetic within miles of “Dead Man's Curve” on sunset blvd, Los Angeles. Same song featured Brian Wilson in [shared] song credits. Jan found out why the track racers chose the 289 inch Cobra. A very heavy corvette with a very heavy big block engine pushing it does astounding things in a straight line, but doesn't corner worth squat.
History repeats itself? Brian Wilson pretty much ended his career when he hit head on with another vehicle, that was likely driven by Timothy Leary.
Methinx they would have put out many top notch songs afterward if this tragic event had not occurred.
So there you have it, in overcompensating for a too brief original posting this emerges needing to stop at the next truck weigh station.
