recall an old live recording [vinyl-IIRC] of Jimi Hendrix playing "Johnny Be Goode", where he substituted "To hear you play your music when the sun go down" with "to hear him play his guitar up-side-down".
can't find a trace of same anywhere/anymore.
may have been a bootleg recording?
any hints appreciated muchly, mitchfit

Is it on the one where he is on one side and Otis Reading on the flip side? I think it's the Monterey Pop one? I'm in Cumbria right now so I cannot check my copy Mitch, and anyway I'd have to shift loads of "stuff" and sort through half a dozen boxes just to find it!

Hendrix in the West is a live album that contains 'JBG'. I'm not sure whether it's the one you're after, though.

Voila! Monterey is it? ........ @ 2min, 22 seconds ish! Still sounds like 'guitar when the sun goes down' to me.
(Edit) And I think this is from Hendrix In The West.

can't decide for sure. as per tallsailor's observation, maybe i just misinterpreted lyrics in the past.
was at a friends house and heard it through his stereo system back in the day. was very amused at the perceived pun.
there was a lot of concert piracy taking place back then, and even commercial LP pressings for sale.
remember many concerts where the performers called out spotting a microphone(s) above the crowd on a boom and subsequent race for the exits by the perps with portable tape decks and gear in tow.
thanx for trying to help, mitchfit
