Pete, Thanks for sharing this. It's a lovely documentary. I saw this film when it was first released a year or two ago. It has some nice anecdotes and facts about Fred and his life and it was nice to see some friends talking about him, but apart from one or two clips of film, we have seen it all before. I guess that's all there is. I wish they had focused more on the British tours and the affect he had on the musicians here. Shine On Michael

...happenstance - we were only talking about the burger van at The Guild Hall, High Wycombe in 1969 just 48 hours ago.

....and the weird thing is.... that so were Ian Anderson and Mike Cooper. Laughing about what Fred must have thought of a High Wycombe burger van in the 1960s!

The site of the notorious Wycombe burger van: The van was located under the arches. Today, the miserable gits have pedestrianised the area.... ho hum!

I was pretty disappointed as I bought subscription to Historic films several years ago because there were a bunch of Fred McDowell films listed, which is where the footage came from I believe, both the Shake Em On Down and they had part of his performance of Amazing Grace, which I have lo-res copy of. I was happy to see William Ferris, I think the European history would have been more to the point. But after I bought the subscription I found that all the clips except the ones in that film were not available online. When I called they gave me a story that these were just for accredited documentarians, but when this Shake Em on Down film came out I thought they were either too expensive for the documentary or they weren't able to get a hold of the ones they listed. Unbelievably when the relevant Newport festivals were presented there's like a 20 second don't blink clip of him performing Highway 61 and the rest of the performance is audio against crowd scenes. There is complete audio of his performance with intoduction and brief patter by him that was available on a website, but I would have to research where I got it from. But the good news is FATPOSSUM is presenting a documentary of the 1969 Memphis Festival with footage - Learn more here: www.fatpossum.com/artists/memphis-69/Lawd lawdy, Harriet

And that is good news! Thanks Harriet, I remember seeing a crowdfunding effort a while back but I lost track, didn't know if it was still on its way.

Even better 4 years later ... Ronnie and Reggie (my 2 Frenchies) sat and appeared to watch it as well! We shouldn't really go off the subject of music on this forum, but I met the real Reggie, Reggie Kray, and he made me a cup of tea. This was around 30 years ago at his home in Crowthorne, AKA Broadmoor Hospital (high security prison for the criminally insane). I did a concert there and on that day, as well as saying hello to the Yorkshire ripper, I worked alongside a celebrity that was known for fixing it for people, who should have not been allowed out at the end of the event. It was all a bit surreal and not pleasant at all. Now....back to Fred McDowell... Shine On Michael
