Just got this 14 fret, slot head Duolian from 1935. These are the strings it came with and they are fairly light, like maybe 12s. It also had an unwound 3rd which I had heard a lot about, but never tried. I kinda like it, it's definitely different from my other Nationals with a wound 3rd. After playing it this way for awhile, I'm thinking that maybe the unwound 3rd was a component in Blind Boy Full and Robert Petway's unique tone... Anyone know if they used the unwound 3rd?

Gaucho, your new guitar sounds lovely. It's a nice one.
What is the serial number? If it's not in Mark Makin's book, it can be added to Mark's ever growing list of numbers.
Shine on Michael.

It’s not in the Book, I Checked last night. It’s 2780 which apparently dates it to ‘35 ish. That’s what I had already figured based on slot head, non ribbed cover and basswood neck w/decal. I love the shape and feel of National’s 14 fret necks!

It reminds me a Captain Beefheart's tune: another great sounding find ! I like to use an unwound 3rd, some DR Pure Blues string with round cores are available in .012/.053...
