Hi All,
As part of my Fred Mcdowell and early acoustic slide study, I've been studying vocal diction, phrasing and expression for a while from the earlier field recordings, so this is a study of that singing style.
I have a kay parlor with a maple fretboard that I set up in C with MM's resonator strings, the guitar may have a soundhole echo if you listen to it on good speakers - I am going to to try soundhole covers of several different types to try and control that as well as damping using a thumbpick.
Based on MM's tuition several years ago. If you can't see and want to - highlight, copy and paste: FYMAbOUE2vs

Hi Harriet, Want to ask if you would put the link to this in the text of a post. I'm unable to play video directly from this site and it would help my limited bandwidth situation to be able to go straight to this video on YouTube with my phone. I remember listnin to the Fred M. You posted last year and it was hauntingly reel... Looking forward to enjoying this un. Many thanks, all best Jeff, Ps. Or maybe you could record an album... Maybe a duet with Michael ? Put me down for one

Hi Creolian,
I tried a couple of things and it won't let me break the link, I don't know whether you can grab the text between the quotation marks and work with it or not but the youtube addresss is between the quotes. I think you have to have youtube on your mobile to see it -
"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYMAbOUE2vs"
I certainly have expressed interest in a solo album from Michael of roots music of the sort that made up the study sessions from 2014-2015.
Thank you for your interest in the video I posted,
My best, Harriet

Thanks Harriet, I have a newish phone and youtube works fine.... Can't see the tiny picture worth diidly but things Sound pretty good if I use headphones. I like the juxtaposition of the still image dissolves over sound trax youve used. Easy on the data plan and all that I'll be watching the new vid later in the PM. All best, Jeff

I think if you just enter the string of characters at the end of the URL(after the equals sign) into the YouTube website's search field, you'll strike gold soon enough. If you can't see the URL text, log in to The Forum using a PC based web browser, right click in the web page and choose "view html" or "source" or whatever. That URL will be evident dozens of times strewn throughout the whelter of text you'll see.
e&oe...

The BB code... Not giving enough thought, I wear the "cap of egg" regularly, DOH!
Really nice tunesmithing and I'm blown away by the sound of that guitar.
All best,
Jeff

Yes I tested on my iphone, android, pc and mac and if you highlight the portion you suggested, copy and paste, you'll get a search engine listing and then click that. I think that's a simpler way than the whole long address and I added it to the post, so thank you! Lawd lawdy, Harriet

Creolian - Thanks for putting your ear to it - I am glad you liked the sound of the guitar enough to comment. - It may be due to the maple fretboard and the key is low. I got the idea from listening to Rosa Lee Hill who plays in Bb I think, and when Fred McDowell played with his wife at the time, Annie Mcdowell, or with the Hunters Chapel Singers including Fannie Davis (I'm not sure if she and Fred were siblings) there's a lot of examples of him playing the melody on the bass to complement female vocalists. I believe he plays the track in D or D# on the records. Lawd lawdy, Harriet

Nice playing Harriet and I think you have the phrasing nicely. As to the guitar sound, which is pretty good, I would experiment with mic placement before using any kind of cover.
