I am wondering what height from members have there strings set for at the 12 fret on Resonators? A Resonator I am interested in, the seller has said it is set at 5mm. with D`addario medium strings. Does that seem excessive? Thanks for any replies.

Hi Wezzywest,
5mm at the 12th fret is pretty high. Something around 2.5mm to 3.5mm is a standard setup for National-style resonator guitars.
If you are serious about this guitar, you need to see some photos that show the bridge height and the break angle from the bridge to the tailpiece, and probably a photo down the fretboard from the headstock to the bridge saddle. You want to be able to lower the strings without having to get into resetting the neck.

On my Republic, after lowering the saddle and shimming the nut I never measured but turns out I'm at just shy of 3mm 12th fret (top of string ) and at 1.5mm first fret. 13-54s. Comfortable for finger style but not too wimpy. On rare occasions playing slide I have to be careful not to fret out the fat string onthe first few frets.
All best, Jeff

As Michael says around 3mm for my Triolian, MM Blues'28 and 1133 fitted with MM PB 15s. However the Dobro M-32 is more like a good 4mm fitted with MM Nickel 15s. To reduce the Dobros action it would need a neck reset as it's on the limit for break angle and saddle height. I don't think that's worth it at the moment as I can play it and it sounds fine. BTW I play a mix of finger style and slide. Hope that helps. PD

Mine is a smidge I’ve 3mm...about 3.3 or thereabouts. 5mm is a bit high if you want to comfortably use it for finger style too, but I bet it’d sound sweet if you mainly want it for slide. Like Michael recommends check that break angle and have a gander down the neck. Lew

Contact Mike Lewis and discuss it with him. He will know the guitar and will be able to advise you correctly
My advice, if it’s a Fine Resophonic, is to buy it and get Mike to do whatever is required

Wezzywest, if you would like me to look at the guitar, send me the link in a PM and I will look it over. I am not interested in buying it and I know Fine Resophonic guitars almost as well as the maker.

Just an update. Well I am now the owner of a Fine Resophonic Style 1, and it`s a beauty. I would like say Big Thanks to Michael for his time and advice regarding the guitar. Also to Mike Lewis, who made the guitar, for his information regarding the life of the guitar. It is a 2011 and made for Ben Montague at the North American Guitar Co. in London. He also sent me a review of the guitar that was done for Acoustic Guitar Magazine in 2012!! Awesome stuff. Now back to the tread topic. I measured the string height at the 12th fret, and from the bottom of the low E to the top of the fret, it is 3.5mm!! The seller was measuring to the top of the string, happy days. It currently has D`Addario mediums on, but I will be changing for Michaels 15-56 set. The build quality is something else, the sound and volume for a wood bodied, wow! So once again, thanks to all who gave me advice in the thread, especially Michael and Mike! Cheers.
