Thought I'd share another of my creations. s84.photobucket.com/albums/k7andys_01/Suprostyle.jpg?t=1166043945Ive always loved the old National 1950s student model, and I had an old SG copy neck kicking around, and some more beech that I laminated to create the body. The cone is set a bit deeper into the body than my first prototype, and I decided to wire the humbucker, to controls on the top bout of the guitar, like the current Reso-lectrics. It has a great sound, from both the cone and the pick-up, though it does need heavy guage strings, because of its 24 inch scale length. the cover plate is mirror plastic, which will be replaced by something metallic, in the near future. It makes a very nice almost travel guitar, because of its compact body, it fits into a small gig bag, and sounds great and loud in both open and standard tunings, and both amplified and acoustic. I have started making Telecaster based resonators which I have sold on eBay, and I made this particular one with the intention of selling it on, and as an experiment to see how a shorter scale guitar would work. But Ive grown rather fond of this one, so I may keep it for a bit. Next project;- a short scale solid bodied reso-bass for pub sessions without lugging that acoustic(and inaudible) bass around!!! Yours Andy S

Hi Andy,
It looks great! I am impressed - I can play them, but I could never make one. My National Student Model is one of my favourite guitars. I have owned it now for almost 20 years. It is not great for gigs, but as a home & travel guitar, it would be hard to beat. The short scale neck is lovely and I don't find I need heavy strings to get a good tone. Sometimes I do put heavy strings on it, but not usually. Make sure you have a good cone in there. I have often recorded with it, it's a great rhythm guitar.
Keep us posted with your progress.
Shine On, Michael.

Andy...I've made a ResoTele (also went out on eBay), and have got another one on the go at present. It would be interesting to swap ideas on these instruments. In particular pickups..so far I've only put a regular magnetic pickup on them, I'd be interested in doing a mag / biscuit pickup sort of set-up..any experience of this?

Dear Chickenbone John,
Ive seen your Cigar box guitars too, and I think they are ace. I have so far sold one Tele based reso, made using a SAGA kit, it looked lovely in natural wood. I just use the stock front pickups, at the price Im selling them, putting in a cone pick-up is a bit too much work. Obviously if someone wanted to me to put one in I could do it, but the front tele pick-up works a treat to my ears. I make them with two controls, though it would be easy to drop a blend pot in place of the tone pot to mix the pickups. I currently have two more under construction, one on a Squier, and one on a Stagg copy, these will be up on ebay and up on my up and coming website in the new year(Michael, would I be able to post my website URL on your site when it is up and running, please?). The best results are ironically with the Teles that are strung through the back of the bridge rather than the body, (the opposite to a purely electric Tele) because it gives you a clean back to do something artistic with the soundholes, though I have developed a template to accomodate the six string holes on a regular tele.
I must stress that I use only Squiers and copies for my creations, no vintage guitars are harmed during the process. I also plan to offer to be able to rout out peoples tired, redundant or otherwise Teles to give them a resonator, but I have to stress that this is a sideline to other things I do, and I am currently only producing them as time, and available guitars allow.
I may try and do a Strat style, to see if i can get that to work, the other guitar that springs to mind is the Squier 51. I also have plans to try solid body short scale reso-basses too.
I love making them, and it combines my love of resonators and Telecasters into one instrument.
I also have to say that this this site, this forum and its contributors have also been a big inspiration.
Seasons Greetings to all of you
Andy S
