Sorry, Quarterquay I meant!
I like what this guy has done with his Jim Dandy...have a listen. He's using a mandolin pickup!

IMHO being fascinated with a guitar and wondering what it might sound like in one's hands are two out of three compelling reasons to check it out, the third being whether or not one has the funds. I bought most of mine that way at least. Just a thought...

Bought it, immediately caused a ding (had to pull up sharp and it didn't have its seatbelt on in the back!). Intonation is a bit sharp so will prob need looking at as I'm clueless with guitar maintenance. Strung with 11s, which sound thin and bright for slide. Sounds alright finger picked, and although when strummed it's hardly delightful, I do like its middlely chug. Could be good for recording. I got stuck in a lot of traffic on the way home so it's already passed the test of being playable in the driver's seat ;-)
If I were to whack some 13s on it straight away and tune a step down (open C, open F, etc) do you think the neck would be ok? I know you're not supposed to jump two gauges, but going on from your comment Harriett, I can't afford to have it set up for a couple more weeks ha ha!

I think if you're gonna stick a pick-up in a guitar and stick it through an amp (like I do), cheap guitars sound really similar to expensive guitars. TT

Judging by that video I would have to agree :-) I like the little bit of drive he's getting.

I think mediums tuned down would be ok. I have one kay parlor from the 60's that's set up C#, and sound pretty good. Usually I use PB's but for this lower tuming I use Martin 80/20's - don't know if that would work for you though.
I use a Bill Lawrence A300 soundhole pickup on small hole parlors. Its also recommended by Chickenbone John for small hole guitars.
Enjoy...

Hi guys, just ordered an A300 from chicken bone John after reading the reviews. I'll let you know how it works out. Hi lonely jelly have you checked out newtone strings heritage line? I use them on vintage guitars I have, they reach pitch at lower tension so less strain. Hope all are well, best wishes, John

Thanks for the tip Bonzo. I'm interested in finding a Schaller Mandolin Neck pickup like the one the video but I will into your suggestion as well :-) As to the strings...does it matter so much with a Jim Dandy as it's not a vintage guitar?
Best

Nickel strings usually have a better balance than bronze through a magnetic pickup. PT

The fact that a Jim Dandy has an adjustable truss rod you should be fine with "tighter" strings .
I've got a set of Newtone MM Nickels 13 - 52s on my Sigma 0015MS fitted with a Dearmond 220 sound hole pickup.
I had to raise the nut a gnats and tune to 'D' but all is good - no neck distortion, no top bellying and it sounds great, even with my playing.
It has been set up with these strings for just over a year now and no signs of problems.
OTH I'll not go higher than Newtone Heritage 13s on my old Regal parlour for obvious reasons.
Best of luck and enjoy the guitar.

Hi guys, What I meant LJ was that the Newtone strings would give you a wider choice of tuning while using a heavier gauge of strings. I put the heritage 13s on my Kalamazoo and tune to open D and everything seems fine. If you are worried about straining the neck these or the Newtone mm's could be a way to go. Best wishes to you all, John (pretty much as PD has said!)

Cheers Pickers Ditch, Harriet and Bonzo. Really useful info! It only cost £60 so I shall have fun experimenting with it :-)
Have a great weekend
