I bought it when it was first published in 1993 and found it a fascinating read, filling in a lot of gaps that seemed to be around in those days. Some of the colour plates are great and you have to duck and weave a bit through the book. Lots of stuff on the business wheelings and dealings of the brothers and their cohorts. My opinion? Buy it and read it in conjunction with Mark Makin's Masterpiece (which I doubt will ever be bettered) - but buy the book, not the kindle version.

It's a book. It's just a book. It was written in a superficially haphazard fashion by someone who was "there at the time" with a great deal of hands-on experience who played a part in the resurgence of the resonator instruments by researching, playing and giving talks about them. It's a jumbled repository of much information that anyone could (of course) spend a great deal of time on the internet (and elsewhere) collating for his or herself, all the while sorting through all the self-agrandising armchair expertise for hard (or at least "believable") facts. Or go buy and/or read this book.
Even after eight years of reading this forum and latterly gazing in awe at Mark's labour of love, I am still not au-fait with all the various designations of the National Guitar Company's products (and Dobro etc.etc.) that people quote so liberally, so speaking personally, along with the indisputable majesty that is Mark's weighty tome, I am pleased that I bought a copy in the few hours after the news broke and before Amazon cynically hiked the price.
I have a great many "reference" books because I have too many specialist interests to remember everything. This book is just another source of (in this example) good, often historical information. If such information (even the plethora of throwaway snippets contained therein) had not been written down for posterity, our little world of resonator heaven would be a poorer place. In my opinion of course.

thanks Steve
I am at this moment wading through Mark's book again, and yet again learning something I missed last time i looked through it.

Hi there !
I have a copy of Mark Makin's book.
Not that I have a Kindle, but an ipad would do wouldn't it ? Is the Kindle version updated - as I know Mark has added "pages" shown on Facebook of guitars found since his book was published, and many more serial numbers ??

I'm a great Kindle user but Mark's book is of such quality that I recommend the paper version. It's the kind of book you just want to hold before you even open it. Friends of mine with no interest in the subject have commented on it's quality. Mine's a pint of bitter Mark.

mmmm,i was also wondering how we could add updates as well Any chance of being able to purchase updates as single indigo printed / laser printed sheets, perhaps in an envelope which could be inserted at the back of the book, as they become available?
