Hi -
I've been teaching myself various Dire Straits / Knopfler National picking parts in the authentic Open G (Capo III) tuning on a classical guitar and was thinking of getting a resonator to get that more metallic sound.
However, £2.5K for a National O14 Style is way out of my price range, so I was wondering if there was a cheaper resonator that would approximate the sound well enough to play DS/MK covers?
I've looked at a Gretsch, a couple of Ozarks and a few others, all around the much lower £500 mark. There doesn't seem to be much in-between. I've also heard it's better to get a full-on resonator and then pay for someone to add a pickup rather than get an electro-resonator.
Do you have any recommendations / advice? Ideally I would like to play it plugged in as I jam with a friend who does all those tricky fender strat licks so need to compete with an electric.
thanks.

Hello Did you know that Michael (you know, the chap who's forum this is) has a range of metal bodied resos that would fit your budget? TT

+ 1 for a MM Lightning, you won't be disappointed!!
Unfortunately you cannot try before you buy easily, you just have to PM Michael through the forum here if you would like one but pretty much every member of this forum will proudly recommend Michaels guitars and if you search around the forum a bit you will find an unlimited supply of excellent reviews. For the money, there is no comparison with anything else on the market.
All the best David

(you can always turn the electric guitar down..that's why they have those knobs). Tell that to the lead guitar player Anyone know what pickup MK used/uses? I'll check on the MK forum as well.

I think he uses the Highlander pickup mentioned above. It's like... $300 or something like that? Maybe more? Oops, sorry, old thread, didn't pay attention.

Just remembered I have a 14 fret Busker Sidewalk, this has a body with the same sandblasted patterns as M.Kns guitar (though the headstock is like a slotted rather than the unslotted National one. Will post some pics tomorrow . PT

I was thinking (hard) about getting some sandblasting tools to make my reso look like his. :-D I've been a fan ever since I saw that record sleeve.

Just to add my voice to the choir, I absolutely agree on the MM guitars. I have an MM Blues (steel bodied as opposed to the Lightning’s brass) and it’s a wonderful instrument. I also have a stellar mid-30s fiddle edge Dobro, and I often find myself reaching for the MM first-they’re that good.

Hi folks
First post - I googled into this site because I'm looking for the same thing as the OP. I've emailed Michael Messer, but I would appreciate any feedback about budget resonators from other manufacturers, if anyone has any experience.
I don't doubt that a Lightning is as good as everyone says, but the truth is I only want a resonator on which to play Romeo and Juliet, so I may not be prepared to shell out for a Lightning. There are other guitars for around £300-500 that I'm looking at.
Many thanks

Welcome to the forum. If you are willing to spend £500 you're pretty close to the cost of the new lightning already. Ask Michael if he has a 'b' stock available, occasionally he does. Once you get your hands on a lightning I'm sure you'll want to play more than Romeo and Juliet! They really are great guitars. Best wishes to you all, John

Thanks John, appreciate the reply. I also heard from Michael who coincidentally was gigging in my home town just last Friday. I'll ask him about B stock, otherwise it'll be a couple of months before I pull the trigger.
Guitars are evil - a fortnight ago, before I decided to learn Romeo and Juliet, it had never even entered my head to buy a resonator. Now it's virtually all I can think of.
