For those of you that dig Rory Gallgher, there is a "rory special" in this months "The Guitar Magazine".
I haven't bought it yet..but i will be picking up a copy on the way home from work. I'm hoping it will help me cope with a sober friday night in when the misses puts 'big brother' on!

Rory Gallagher was a big influence on my musical taste (no pun intended). I used to see him play regularly in the early seventies. He was one of the people who turned me on to National guitars, slide guitar & pre-war country blues. He was a great artist and is sadly missed.
Messin with the Kid....
Shine On, Michael.

Rory Gallagher was one of THE great musicians and was always friendly and warm with his audience. As a youngster in the early seventies I saw him play many times, and something that will stay with me forever was his friendly attitude towards his audience. After every show he would return to the stage to meet and shake hands with a queue of students waiting for an autograph or just a hand-shake. One by one we would meet him and not knowing what to say at the moment of the hand-shake, we would all say the same thing...."good gig Rory!" ........it became THE thing to do after a Rory Gallagher show. Two very memorable shows for me were in the very early seventies (hard to date), one was at the Marquee in London and the other was at Watford Technical College......he was awsome on both of those occasions. He used to talk about the old blues guys....Blind Boy Fuller & Leadbelly. He played electric slide, acoustic slide on a Triolian, mandolin, harmonica, piano....and he had a great voice. He was a major talent and influenced so many musicians. He died in 1995 while I was recording my fourth album, MOONbeat. I dedicated the album to him. When I was a Cowboy....out on the Western Plain.... Shine On, Michael.

It was a great article with sumptous photos but those guys never know the difference between a triolian and a duolian. This was also the case for a recent acoustic guitar magazine(stateside) where skip Mcdonald is described as holding a triolian when it is a 12 fret duolian. This is akin to calling a strat a tele! Anyway starting to rain so I must get my anorak! Regards Lee.

Last time i saw him was in the Early 90s, in Reading. Although I look out for these things the only way i found out about the gig was from a tiny b&w poster on a lamp post! Couldn't believe it was really him! But it was, and a great gig it was too. He had, by that time, put on an awful lot of weight and really didn't look particularly well. A far cry from the gaunt looking bloke in the poster i had on my wall at Uni, circa Calling Card, that's for sure.
Despite there being absolutely no advertising for the gig, the place was heaving, which has got to say something.....

I saw Taste at Watford Tech in 1969 as well - Rory Gallagher was unbelievable! I saw Cream a few times and much as I love(d) Clapton, he couldn't match Rory for sheer excitement and entertainment. Also saw Taste at Klooks Kleek plus a number of times at the Marquee - but he played there a lot. I'm also positive I saw Taste at Dunstable Civic in that time period, but I haven't found the gig in the records, only a later one when he had his own band, which definitely wasn't it.

I may have mentioned this before - but the by far the most amazing Rory gig i ever saw was around '77/'78 at the much sadly missed 'Odeon' in New Street, Brum. On the way up from London, the bands equipment van broke down - big time . Realising the van + contents were not going to make Birmingham in time for the show, Rory turned up at the gig carrying just his two acoustics (Triolian & Martin), and announced over the P.A. that it was to be a purely acoustic show and the management had kindly offered to refund ticket money......and some idiots took up the offer What followed was two and a half hours of pure musical magic - Rory played ALL of his best loved numbers, and for us hippie 'blues-freaks', plently of pre-war songs too.......great memories of a wonderful musician. Slide On! Ian.

I saw Rory at the Marquee too, 'round about the time of the Taste/Blister on the moon album. '69 or '70 I think...
Now, Klooks Kleek, Ouch! that brings back some memories too!

Hi everybody,
I too am a big Rory Gallagher fan and have been ever since I heard "Blister on the Moon" as a schoolboy. It's punk ten years before punk was invented! The first time I saw him live was at the Isle of Wight which I believe was Taste's last gig. As a student in the early 70s I saw him on numerous occasions at the height of his popularity and was always amazed by his great versatility on a wide range of instruments and his tremendous rapport with his audience. The last time I saw him was at a guitarist's evening in London where he shared the bill with Richard Thompson, David Linley, and Juan Martín. A brilliant night but sadly I can't remember when or where it took place. Does anyone else remember it?
I was deeply saddened to hear of his early demise in 1995 but still get enormous pleasure listening to his albums. The live albums (Irish Tour and Live in Europe) are sublime and I still have a soft spot for that first Taste album. I also love Blueprint ("Walk on Hot Coals" is such a great opener) and Calling Card. Does anyone still have a copy of the article from The Guitar Magazine?
All the best,
Joe (aka Mairena Red)

Hi Joe,
I have a cassette recording of the concert you went to; it was at the Hammersmith Odeon -Rory Gallagher, Richard Thompson, David Lindley, and Juan Martín. I don't have the whole show, just two songs, one of which is 'I Can't Be Satisfied' with Rory singing. It may not be easy to find this cassette, but I will have a hunt. I have a feeling it is part of a collection of David Lindley bootlegs that I have.
Does anybody have a live CD of Rory playing a solo acoustic blues set? It could be recorded in Germany or Belgium. I heard it about ten years ago and I never got its title, or any other detail.
Shine On, Michael.

Hi Michael,
Thanks for the information about the gig, I thought it was at a smaller venue like the Wigmore Hall. I lived all over West London from 1972 to 1989 so the Hammersmith Odeon was my local medium-sized venue. Any idea of the date of the gig? I would love to hear the tape. I bought a DVD of the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival and it brought back so many memories. There's a bit of Rory playing slide on his old white Tele.
I was back in London from 14-22 October (which is why it has taken me a while to reply) but did not have a chance to say hello in person as you were "resting" (as they say in the theatre). I did manage to get to Denmark St to say hello to Dave King (good to see you again, Dave, looking forward to the pics of your Harley) and Ron and Mel at the LRC. I bought various bits and pieces including another Intelli tuner (my guitar tutor liked my previous one so much that I had no choice but to give it to him!) and another King slide (very sad news that the guy who makes them passed on to a better world in the summer). I also tried a number of square-neck dobro-style guitars and really liked the Goldtone Paul Beard Signature Deluxe which comes in at around 750 quid. Have you tried them? What do you think?
Hope to catch you next time I'm over.
All the best,
Joe (aka Mairena Red)

Hi Joe,
Good to hear from you. I will hunt out the Rory cassette and let you know when I have turned it into a CD.
I have played the Goldtone Beard Signature Dobro and I agree with you about them - excellent value for money.
Shine On, Michael.

Hi
I've been popping in and out of this forum for a while but have never posted. So Hi to everyone and especially Michael - lots of respect to a quality musician.
I'm an old time fan of Rory from back in his Taste days and it's nice to see people remembering him so well. If I could cite one album that shaped my musical tastes until this day, "On the Boards" by Taste would be high on the list to choose from.
Michael, there would be many of us who would just love to hear ANYTHING from that gig with Richard Thompson, Juan Martin and David Lindley. The nearest I've go to it is a track from the "Wheels Within Wheels" album called "Flight to Paradise" with Juan Martin. I understand they did do it live, but it's a studio recording on the album and not live.
On the acoustic gig, do you have the first "official" RockPalast DVD, recorded in Germany. It features a mixed electric/acoustic set, where Rory does the first half hour playing acoustic. I've also a bootleg compilation that includes a TV show he did in Ireland called "Me and My Music" - all acoustic and about half an hour long too. People too often forget what a great acoustic player he was.
Joe, I still have a copy of the Guitarist Magazine, which has a pretty good tab for "Unmilitary Two Step". I can make a PDF file of it and see if there's a way to get you a copy.
Good wishes to all.

Hi AllAroundMan,
Anyone called AllAroundMan has got to be a Rory Gallagher fan! Thanks for dropping by and saying hello. And...thanks for the info about the RockPalast DVD, I will certainly get a copy. Your bootleg of Me & My Music sounds interesting. I think I have seen that film, a long time ago. The film from the BBC Theatre in Shepherds Bush on Rory's 28th birthday is a great one too. I will certainly dig out the Hammersmith Odeon recording and when I have found it and got it on to a CD I will let you guys know.
I have some wonderful Betamax tapes of RockPalast concerts, one day I'll have to find an old player and copy them. David Lindley is a classic film from the RockPaslast archive. I believe I have a Johnny Winter one too.
Thanks for your kind words AllAroundMan and stay in touch.
Shine On, Michael
