I heard he was lucky enough to learn from another eminent slide player when he started out...

Really enjoyed this video, however it leaves a few unanswered bits, especially as we don't have the tab.....at about 7:30 in the video he runs through a scale of 3rds in open E that I cant quite make out, can anyone help with the fingering for this please?
Cheers!

Hi Paul,
There are many of those scales in 3rds. The one Chris is demonstrating is...
In pairs ...open D or E tuning...string 3 open, string 4 open >string 3 fret 1, string 4 fret 2 >string 3 fret 3, string 4 fret 4, >string 3 fret 5, string 4 fret 5, >string 3 fret 7, string 4 fret 7, > string 2 fret 5, string 3 fret 5, >string 2 fret 7, string 3 fret 7, >string 2 fret 9, string 3 fret 8.
Another great pair in open D or E tuning is...major scale up the top string... Frets 0 2 4 5 7 9 11 12 ...and on the 3rd string 0 1 3 5 7 8 10 12....played as pairs of harmony notes.
There are some lovely ones on the top two strings, also all the way up on strings 3 and 4 which would be a continuation of Chris's first scale...
I hope that helps

And for open G the first `set` can be done on strings 2-3 and 1-2 the second use the 3rd string (rather than 1st) and 2nd (rather than 3rd) PT

Michael, Shouldn't that be string 2 fret 9, string 3 fret 8?

I don't know much about Chris's setup, but he uses light strings and a very lightweight glass/perspex slide, probably Dunlop.

With regard to slides used. I read an interview a couple of years back and he said he's got a friend who repairs and restores chandeliers, who whenever required cuts him a length of glass tube off.
It's funny how some guitarist's seem to be the exception to the 'rules' of playing guitar. Chris Rea slide guitarist who uses's light as opposed to heavy strings. Tony Iommi Heavy metal guitarist with a tone as heavy as cement but who use's light as opposed to heavy strings!
