Just received an early birthday present - a hardback copy of "Bluesman Vols 1-3" by Rob Vollmar and Pablo Callejo.
It's an adult comic book about "Lem Taylor's harrowing journey across late 20s Arkansas, hunted for a crime he didn't commit. Lem and his blues companion find a gig in a juke....."
First look - interesting.
I'll let you know later.

Robbie Robertson: Testimony. Basically the story of The Band from its roots with Ronnie Hawkins to the breakup in what 1976? I found it a very melancholy story of substance abuse and disfunctional relationships. It'll put you off any romantic dreams of the rock and roll life, but it sent me back to listen to some wonderful music I hadn't heard for a while. I think Levon Helm wrote a version which presents a different picture of the breakdown of his friendship with Robbie Robertson, but haven't read that yet. I'm roughly half way through this and I'll continue to struggle through the name dropping etc. to the end but, like Groff, I'm finding it difficult - particularly the 'holier than though' attitudes of the late 1960s which I lived and played through. Some of the characters, particularly Albert Grossman, come across as real ani taking the widdle out of ordinary working people living their 'ordinary' lives who actually paid their wages if they (the ani) only stopped to think about it all for a second or two. There were two different worlds at the time and as I'm reading this I'm really glad I wasn't involved in theirs. Show business, eh?

Just about finished 'Sonic Wonderland' by Prof Trevor Cox. Took a year due to checking his web site and researching the locations. Brilliant book, Chapter 1 'The most reverberant place in the world'...
Cheers

1) 'This Wheel's on Fire: Levon Helm and the Story of the Band' I read this one after Robbie Robinsons 'Testimony' and found it to be a much better read and it seemed to be more "realistic" version of the bands story. Interesting when one compares the episode of The Last Waltz - a glory hunter vs a musician could be the best way to describe things but what do I know; I was on a different continent at the time. Having listened to The Band for decades and watched the film again last night I know which one I tend to believe more.
2) 'Near Death': Richard Wall. What an unusual story which I will refrain from describing - It'll spoil things for those who have yet to read it. If you like James Lee Burke, Elmore Leonard et al. give it a try - you won't be disappointed. (Thanks for the heads up, TT)
PD.

My daughter gave me this B.B. King auction catalog with everything from guits, amps, road cases, clothes, jewelry and more. Not a lot of reading but great photos and auction estimates. Last week I won a bid at an auction and picked a stack of mostly older sheet music but the main thing I was after were these two Hawaiian steel books, one from 1936 and one from 1937. In the lot there was also 3 Jethro Tull books which are nothing like the one I already own but hey... Attachments:

Hi Tommo,
I've had thoughts on&off to buy the Marsden book. Not a heavy metal fan BUT I know he is a blues player at heart. Played one gig with him about 3yrs ago - having met him for a rehearsal (he was guesting with our band), the afternoon of the evening's gig. Very nice guy, very genuine, and rather complimentary of my piano playing skills - even when I felt I couldn't do a particular song justice (Fleetwood Mac's "Same Old Blues")
Is the book more about his exploits over the decades or is it ALL about the guitars ? I'd be more interested about the guitars !
Back on the topic of what we are reading, I've just started reading again, my well read copy of "The Amazing Secret History of Elmore James", by Steve Franz (who passed away last year). Excellent book, very well researched & informative.

Snakehips
It is not specifically about his guitars although I understand that he has released a coffee table book with many photos covering his collection. This is a general tale from his early days through to the present, not dwelling on rock star behaviour but just telling the story, well worth a look in my opinion. He is one humble and honest guy.

The Chitlin' Circuit: And the Road to Rock 'n' Roll by Preston Lauterbach.
An absolute MUST READ for anyone who is even half interested in the development of music and the tough music business in the USA through the decades.
And, boy, there are some stories and characters in there too...
