Sorry to hear about Deke, currently reading "Maximum Darkness" which is the last of his books that I have read, great and amusing read about life on the road, all of his written work has brought a smile to my face and thus well recommended to anyone.

Now I'm working thru the Howling Wolf book, "Moaning at midnight". The writing style seems disorganized as it bounces around a lot, but the info is fantastic and very interesting. Joint authorships often turn out like this - nature of the beast. The best I've read is Bob Reisman's Broonzy biography I Feel So Good published in 2011, The research is superb and the input from surviving BBB relatives a gem. Here follows the table of contents. CONTENTS of BBB book Ix Forword by Peter Guralnick ix Appreciation by Pete Townshend xv Acknowledgments 1 Swing Low, Sweet Chariot 1 2 My Name Is William Lee Conley Broonzy 6 3 When Will I Get to Be Called a Man? 21 4 Let's Go Away from Here! 39 5 I'm Gonna Play This Guitar Tonight from A to Z!" 55 6 Serve It to Me Right 7° 7 State Street Boys 83 8 Just a Dream 91 9 Big Bill and Josh Are Here to Play the Blues for You 98 10 Preachin' the Blues 115 11 Blues at Midnight 124 12 "That's the Nicest Guy I Ever Met in My Life" 139 13 Stranger in a Strange Land 147 14 Nourish Yourself on Big Bill 156 15 "Be Proud of What You Are!" 167 16 Too Many Isms 186 17 Low Light and Blue Smoke 204 18 "A Requiem for the Blues" 225 Epilogue 247 Afterword 257 Selected Discography 259 Bill on Film 263 Notes 265 Index 307 A gallery of photographs follows page 166.

Robbie Robertson: Testimony.
Basically the story of The Band from its roots with Ronnie Hawkins to the breakup in what 1976? I found it a very melancholy story of substance abuse and disfunctional relationships. It'll put you off any romantic dreams of the rock and roll life, but it sent me back to listen to some wonderful music I hadn't heard for a while.
I think Levon Helm wrote a version which presents a different picture of the breakdown of his friendship with Robbie Robertson, but haven't read that yet.

The Flood Year 1927, Susan Scott Parrish. Just read a review of a new book on the devastating Mississippi flood. Looks very interesting, might get it for my birthday. PT PS: my birthday is in September, last year ALL forum members forgot! I may PM. everyone nearer the time. Remember, guitars make great presents.

'Detroit 67' by Stuart Cosgrove. A weighty tome about a seminal year in the history of a city that has always fascinated me in a slightly morbid way ever since I got lost in a very dodgy part of town driving a shiny hire car many years ago! Best laxative I've ever had.It cleverly juxtaposes a piece of the Tamla Motown story with the summer riots of that year--black people with aspiration and black people with no hope. Truth really is stranger than fiction IMHO.
PS.I just went through the previous posts to see if anyone else had mentioned this book (they hadn't) and realised how many good recommendations there are so thanks everyone for that.

Bo Diddley: Living Legend - The Man with the Most Famous Beat in the World by George Wright. Published 1995.
Mostly quotes from interviews with the author and others by the look of it so far.
An interesting read but I wish Mr. Wright had refrained from listing all the cover versions as Bos' recordings are mentioned.

I am currently reading a pre-release copy of an autobiography by the co-founder of WOMAD, my dear friend Thomas Brooman CBE, called 'My Festival Romance'. It is a wonderful read with some extraordinary and highly entertaining anecdotes of the 70s punk scene and life at the helm of the world music industry in the 80s, 90s and 00s. It is an excellent read! Amazon press release... Thomas Brooman CBE was one of the organisers of the first WOMAD festival, held at the Royal Bath and West Showground in Shepton Mallet, Somerset, in 1982. That first event was an artistic triumph but a financial disaster. Womad survived, just, and Brooman went on to organise more than 150 WOMAD festivals around the world. His career with WOMAD came to an end in 2008, just weeks before the announcement that he was to be awarded a CBE by the Queen in her Birthday Honours List for services to music and charity. In his autobiography, My Festival Romance, Brooman explores the musical influences of his childhood in Bristol and Buenos Aires; he describes how WOMAD developed out of the Bristol punk scene of the late seventies; recalls his time organising festivals and travelling the world with some of the biggest names in music; and reflects upon life after WOMAD. The book includes black and white and colour photography. My Festival Romance will be released on the 1st June 2017. Shine On Michael. PS: ....oh yes, it also includes a short chapter about yours truly and the Man in Black!

There is some confusion going on here...
Jimmy Rogers - Chicago blues guitarist, known for playing with Muddy Waters.
Jimmie Rodgers - 'The Singing Brakeman' / 'Blue Yodeller' was one of country music's first superstars.

I'd rather be the Devil - Skip James and the Blues by Stephen Calt Cracking read about the life and times of the genius blues man. Includes stories of murder , gambling and bootlegging. Intriguing. RP
