There is a big demand building for this book. I hope the publishers are printing enough copies.

The way to order a book at this moment, is to PM Mark Makin with your email address and he will be in touch when he has books ready to ship.
There is no publisher involved with this. Mark is self-publishing this book so that he doesn't have to give everything away to a publisher. Too many years of work have gone into this for him to give it away to a publisher.
I had started this thread as a forum news item in Talking Blues, but I can see that it has become an advertising thread. I am sure Mark would like to come in and talk with forum members about the book, so I am going to move this thread into Main Street.

Hi there !
Well, my birthday is coming up towards the end of February, and my wife is now already at the stage of never knowing what to get me for my birthdays and Christmas, so this book solves that issue, EASY ! Well, when my wife says she doesn't know what to buy me, I usually say that another guitar wouldn't be refused !!!
Question for Mark - Is it too late for more serial numbers ? Not sure if I ever gave him no.s from Nationals I own / have owned. Got two StyleO's with lowish serial numbers and mixed metals,, for instance, that may be useful helping pinpoint timescales, or maybe not !

Hello Everyone Thanks for your comments. I have to say, I'm a bit nervous, now that the secret is out. It has been a very 'monastic' experience for the last seven years, nursing this thing along whilst maintaining a sort of 'news blackout' all the time. I didn't really have the conviction that I could tackle this project alone and successfully complete it - so it made sense not to mention it. There's nothing worse than promising people something and then backing out! However, there have been many times on this forum in the last few years when people have got very close to suggesting ..."why don't you write a book!" and I wasn't really able to respond. It has only really happened because firstly, I am a graphic designer so I could produce the thing 'in house' as it were by working on it 'side by side' with my normal freelance work. Secondly, a long time colleague who owns a printers in Nottingham made the project a reality by personally backing it for me. This means that this is a private publication (still to the highest 'coffee-table' standards) with an initial run of 2500. The only other book on the subject tends to be very much a text book. This not like that. I wanted it to be a lavishly visual project. I was much more interested in depicting the whole world of the Dopyeras brothers ventures - resoglas, mother of toilet seat, dobros, lap steels etc. and not just the limited world of the "shiny resonator". I didn't want to re-invent the wheel however so for many years nothing happened. I didn't form a plan about what it should be like until I read a thread on a forum where someone was trying to find a way of capturing the pattern off a style 0 with a view to using it on a home-made instrument of their own. I realised that I could produce a book with a sort of "Aircraft squadron markings" type of illustration. So I have accurately drawn EVERY sandblasted pattern, variant, engraving, coloured stencil, senorita and hula girl, logo, badge, graphic, of all the Dobros, Nationals, Supros, Regals, Mosrites, and trade house instruments that I could find. Here are two drawings at better resolution: I have also acquired over 100 original catalogues and nearly 10000 photos of various instruments in the course of this project so with this amount of reference material, I was able to draw all the variants of a particular model and place them side by side (e.g. all 17 slightly different variants of black and white New Yorker lap steels from 1935 to 1968) so it should be possible for anyone to identify their own PARTICULAR instrument as they are all in more or less chronologcal order. As Michael has already mentioned, printing is on-going as we speak and binding of the hard-bound stitched copies should be achieved by the end of January. It looks like having a cover price of £60 and at first, will be available directly from me (probably by paypal) so I think, for now, it makes sense for people who are interested to just send me PMs on the forum or my personal email "mark.makin (at) ntlworld.com" with names, addresses and emails and we'll establish a list. There's plenty of time and I will ensure that everyone knows what is happening. Thanks again for your enthusiasm, I hope you like it when it appears. PS. Thanks to everyone who is already sending me PMs. I AM receiving them OK and logging your details! Best Mark PPS Hello Richard I'm afraid I stopped editing the serial numbers a few weeks ago. I had to do this because although I was still finding around 30 new ones a day, I needed to work with the binders on a final pagination and once that was established there is no possibility of adding extra pages. I have been working with many friends from California to Memphis, TN inputting numbers and I still am adding them. However, we are adding them in red to the database, so that we will be able to recognise which were added after the book is printed. The other problem is that, it would probably be acceptable to add a few numbers to the end of the T or X series Valco numbers(many 100s of which are now in the book) because they are at the end of the list. However, early numbers like Triplates and Style 0s are at the front of the lists and would necessitate moving the pages in a sequence which now totals more than 36 pages of numbers. Let me know what numbers you have anyway Richard and I'll check back with you - they may be in already!! Best Mark

Hi Mark,
Are those computerized illustrations? I am wondering what software you used for them. Will there be an e-book edition?
They are terrific as well as the layout - fooled me I though they were photos at first glance.
Peace, Harriet

Thank you Mark, I knew your plan for at least five years, Mike L. Michael M. discussed secretly (I was there). So, I did not tell anyone in the "French resonator sphere" , out of respect for your meticulous work. Now I can not wait to have this labor of love in my hands ... Sincerely, your friend Pascal.

Hello Harriet Yes, the whole book is built on an iMac with InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop and Excel. This is one of the reasons that it has taken until now to achieve. If this was done conventionally with airbrushes on artboards, it would have taken decades! It is now so easy to hold something of this high resolution size now that we have large capacity hard drives. Best Mark
Hi Pascal It sure is a relief now that I can come out in to the open with it! Best Mark

Hi Mark I see you took an opportunity to let the secret out on reso-hangout last week, but to be honest, its lost on most of them (MM forum members excepted of course) - furrowing their brows in a vain attempt to comprehend the magnitude of your acheivement. Any reason why they were let in to the secret first? TT

Hi TT Yes you're quite right. I was about to help them all out when I spotted them floundering around looking for the various Hound Dog logos. To be honest, I couldn't be bothered to split them all out so I just posted the page.
I thought, well, I'm close enough now to doing it anyway so it just seemed like the prod I needed. Best Mark

I'm looking forward to this book becoming available. I've read B. Brozman's tome too many times and I need something new!
