One thing I have been trying lately is cutting my thumb nail square and not too long, rather than round. It gives you a neat triangle of strong nail on the bottom of the thumb - a bit like a small thumb pick. You do have to 'soften' the corner point a bit so that it doesn't grab. I see some vids on youtube with blokes with great long thumb nails that seem totally useless unless you play in a hand-arched, classical style - which is not conducive to string-damping.
