Dire Straits - Making Movies This CD collected a lot of dust. While I was listening to Tunnel of Love I had a notion that Knopfler's fingerpicking and excellent bends and vibratos on his stratocaster seem almost like slide playing.

I have been listening to this record a lot the past week or so. Makes me really want a long scale Stella style 12 string

Picked up this CD today. Great vocals and nice slide playing by the much missed Johnny D. Super voice too, a bit of a cross between Paul Rogers and John Martyn.

Lovely to see Paul Geremia mentioned on here. Paul is one of the greats of acoustic guitar music, there is no question about it. I have had the pleasure of spending time with Paul, fist time was in the mid 90s in Dublin, and the second was when we were both involved with the annual UK Blues Week event back in around 2004 or 2005, which I did for many years.
Paul is special one, that's for sure.

Also really good to see the late Johnny Dickenson featured on here too. I met Johnny on a few occasions, but sadly we never got to know each other because we were often pitched against each other by the media, which kind of created uncomfortable vibes between us. Journalists and radio presenters would talk about us both in the same sentences as if they were talking about two sportsman, rather than two artists. Johnny was a great musician and had a beautiful touch and tone when he played slide. Johnny died far too young in 2019.

This is how to cheer yourself up... I was lucky enough to catch these two in action on the street in New York - absolutely wonderful experience, never to be forgotten.

Jackson Browne is such a great writer. Without him the Eagles would be missing one of their best songs. Shine On Michael

Jackson Browne is such a great writer. Without him the Eagles would be missing one of their best songs. Shine On Michael Hi Michael That’s absolutely true and what a great song, but Glenn Frey wrote the verse which finished the song, the ‘I’m standing on a corner…’. Jackson had agonised over finishing that song for ages. Jackson, as you say, is a great writer but what a fabulous voice too. One of my favourites for sure. David Lindley, rest his soul, was the perfect foil for Jackson and the pair always seem to have a blast when playing in the stripped down duo setting. Have a great evening all! Andy

Johnny died far too young and unfortunately was plagued with several serious illnesses. I saw him live several times in his solo era and also in his cover band, ‘The Hillbillies From Outer Space’, which was always a great night of music. Sad to hear that journalists made you both feel uneasy like that. As you rightly say, you shouldn’t have had to feel like you were being compared like Borg and McEnroe or whoever. At the end of the day, you were both using your considerable talents to move people and, hopefully, make them feel better than they did when they entered the concert hall. Maybe giving some musical inspiration to some members of the audience too. I remember seeing JD one time and he mentioned that the National he was playing was a recent addition to his guitar collection. That would be late 1990s or very early 2000. I got the impression that it was his first National. Cheers Andy

I met Johnny Dickinson at one of the London Guitar shows when they were held in Wembley arena, Johnny was helping and supporting one of his friends from the North East who was an excellent luthier (Name escapes me) I think he has relocated to Australia Anyway for whatever reason I had a guitar with me and played something or other with the slide, Johnny was a great guy and his songs paint great pictures with autobiographical stories that really connected. Must dig out his CD's. Lee

He was also in the local news back then, 10 years or so ago, I forget, as some of his hand built acoustics were stolen from his workshop. If my memory, what memory 😳 serves anyway, Andy

Yes that's the guys, I think they may have all been there as Sobell was probably still apprenticing Mr Forster. I remember the stolen guitar saga.
