Higher Ground is still a beautiful piece of work. However, nothing could ever equal or better the original, which is a masterpiece by a genius.
...although Stevie's own live recording is pretty darn cool!

John Miller's new book of transcriptions on Hillbilly Blues has got a lot of great numbers in it. There's some great slide playing from Frank Hutchison and this guy who I didn't know before, Lester McFarland.

There's some great slide playing from Frank Hutchison and this guy who I didn't know before, Lester McFarland. That's a lovely version of a classic folk song that goes right through the twentieth century. No disrespect to Lester McFarland, but for me it's a generic sound. Nothing can touch Will Shade's Memphis Jug Band recording of K.C. Moan from 1929. It has an extraordinary quality that I have never heard in any other recording of the song. Shine On Michael
insert code here
Love this. It was filmed for a BBC documentary that in the early days of Betamax recorders I must have watched a hundred times. Shine On Michael

Last night I enjoyed "Jeff Beck - Rock'n'Roll Party Honoring Les Paul (2010)'. Worth watching. A blast from the past. Rockabilly. Fantastic!
I believe this was filmed at FAT TUESDAYS, a small hole-in-the-wall club in NYC where Les Paul played inconspicuously in his golden years. Two drink minimum admission got you in a cozy lounge watching him just being himself. I met him there one night back in the late '80's. The waitress never got around to soliciting me for a drink and cover charge! Free! I will always feel guilty about the grimace of physical pain on his face as he accepted my handshake. I didn't know about his injured right hand. He didn't say a word. He graciously signed pickguards that his followers would present in soliciting for memorabilia. He had no problem with that. He was quite a gentleman.
Jeff Beck - Rock'n'Roll Party Honoring Les Paul (2010) Many of the standards he and his wife Mary Pickford used to perform, played by Jeff Beck and an entourage of pure talent. Post war music, Rockabilly. Elvis! What's not to love?

I always enjoy listening to brothers Abishek and Praakesh Borkar, they are such great players. Sarod is one of my favourite instruments to see played.
Abishek, on our right, is fast becoming one of India's current greats of classical music.

Frank & His Sisters... Swahili Lullaby - Mwanangu Lala
This is beautiful music from Kenya in the 1950s. The guitar playing reminds of my old friend, SE Rogie, from Sierra Leone. The girls sound like the Carter family. It's very cool indeed!
