Hey all,
My coodercaster project is nearly finished so I'm about to order some strings but I'm curious to see which brand you guys like for electric slide?
I'll be ordering 12 gauge but not sure which make to go for?
Thanks.

I use these on my Telecaster and Stratocaster, in my opinion the sound is fuller and more responsive than other brands I've tried. Snake Oil Strings "Original Nickel Sets Introduced back in 1989, these are still the only strings that accurately reproduce the original bell-like tone and warm respinse of the pure nickel roundwound strings of the 1950's and 60's. While retaining a contemporary feel, our "Original Nickel" sets are the ultimate experience for players favoring vintage instruments. Being particularly effective for any single-coil instrument, they are useful for the modern player who wants a warmer tone from any guitar. " snakeoilstrings.com/Hope I could help Televiking

If memory serves me right from one of the few interviews he does Mr Cooder is none too fussy about strings, the older they are on his guitar the better, put on what you like and stick with em, and maybe think about thoughening up the 12 to a 13 or 15 to take the slide unless you have the action up a bit. welcome to the coodercaster club, lets see what it looks like when you are happy with it. Regards Lee

Hi Lee,
Yes I've heard a couple of interviews where he talks about strings, I know he likes flat wounds on his blue guitar and round wounds on his leopard coodercaster, I don't think he's too bothered about the brand.
At the moment my main electric slide guitar is a danelectro DC 59, I used to use 13's on this guitar but have come down to 12's as they still give me the taughtness I need but I also do quite a bit of fretting behind the slide. They also allow me to bend the stings easier, it was pretty tough with 13's! Also the strat has a longer scale so I reckon 12's will do nicely for now.
This coodercaster project has taken me a long time and I've nearly finished. It took me a while but I managed to source a 1963 teisco goldfoil and I got a lollar supro steel for the bridge so I'm hoping for good things.
The body is a wildwood that I had professionally finished in nitro and reliced by Mark Jenny of MJT who did a great job, the neck I had custom made with a 12" radius and large headstock from Musikcraft.
I cant wait to play this thing, I'm hoping it will be ready this week and will certainly post some pics when its all finished. It has taken me over a year to complete!

Ry Cooder is extremely fussy about his strings.. (as he is about most things) Ry Cooder has used D'Addario EJ21 Jazz Lights on his coodercaster (12-52) for many years. However, unless you have an extremely light touch, and only use a lightweight glass bottleneck you may struggle to play slide with strings this light.. (especially the 12) On his Daphne Blue strat fitted with the bigsby he has used austrian made Thomastik Jazz swing flatwound strings (12-50) for 25 odd years He's recently been using D'addario EXP coated strings on his baritone telecaster and is apparently very pleased with the sound, describing it as giving the tone of the roundwound, but the string noise of the flatwound. I've been using Newtone Michael Messer Slide Classics (13 - 52) on my Coodercaster, and they work (and sound) much better for me than the D'Addarios do..

The guitar which I have just posted as my Avatar picture has the Lollar at the bridge, it has a modern variant of the teisco at the neck, mainly I like the subtle use of pearloid pickguard! Lollar has nailed the supro as you will soon find out. Regards Lee

hi5 slide I'm not fussy at all about strings, but I've been using ernie ball / slinky strings for 30+ years 'cos they are dependable - top that! Anyway, shoot me down in flames, but my electric sound is 1% strings, 20% guitar, 20% amp, 20% pedals and 20% playing style +/- 1%. Let me ask a question - would you have refused to buy a Ry Cooder album if he had beeen using ernie balls? I think not - no-one would know the difference. TT

I guarantee one person would be able to tell (feel) the difference - Ry Cooder. And that is the whole point..

I'm going to get a set of Newtones and compare them with the ones I already have.
