Gerry If only I was clever enough to write the rest of the lyrics to that song....! ;D Alaska picks: yes that's true, you do need some fingernail length in order for them to stay put. From personal experience I find they prevent nail breakages when playing and also provide some volume. Sonya

I tried for ages to get on with fingerpicks but never could. I tried all sorts made from both plastic and metal (apart from Alaska picks) but none of them seemed to work for me. I had another go recently, most people agree that they’re pretty much essential if you want to get a good slide tone from a resophonic guitar. A few weeks later I’m reasonably proficient with them (just the standard Dunlop plastic ones). All it took was a bit of perseverance and patience. I still muck up from time to time, usually by picking the wrong string but I’m sure that will improve in time. I’d urge anybody that struggles with picks to stick at it, you will get the hang of it eventually and it probably won’t take as long as you think.
As for nails, I’m pretty lucky because mine seem to be tough enough to survive without any additives. I keep them reasonably short so I pluck with a combination of fingertip and nail. I did grow them too long once and promptly broke one, it was bloody painful! I won’t make that mistake again.

There's a nice 'pro-pik' that leaves the flesh of your fingertip free but has a metal edge around your nail. You can view the range on Guptil music website (or put Pro-pik in a search engine) & buy via Ron at Frets. ;D

There's a nice 'pro-pik' that leaves the flesh of your fingertip free but has a metal edge around your nail. As a matter of fact, I ordered a set of those, and received them this week. The typename is Fingertone, from Propik. Well, in general I play with my nails, and dislike fingerpicks, they feel clumsy to me, but I have to say that these Fingertones come close to natural nails, feel-wise (and much more volume too). In any case, I think at least they are great if you break a nail, you can use one of these picks till the nail has grown back again. Regards, John.
