As for copying, well, Sammy Mitchell used to do a rendition on Crossroads that was scarily accurate.
Yes but Sammy played it out of Vastapol, not Spanish tuning & still sounded a bit like RJ but mostly like himself RIP.

Sam played Crossroads in Spanish open G tuning. I have never heard him play it in any other tuning. I am not saying he didn't, but I never heard him do it.

The Sam Mitchell renedition of Crossroads Blues I've heard (on 'Art of Bottleneck/Slide Guitar') is in open G, and sounds quite different from the RJ version. It has a couple of powerful rythmic solos. I LOVE that version, and try to play it as well as I can, though at some points it is too difficult for me!

I have those Pristine recordings of Robert Johnson they really are good as are the Charlie Patten and Blind Willie McTell recordings.
