Count me in the left-handed person playing right handed guitar category. I thought it to be an advantage when I was younger, as I never had any problems fingering difficult chords while learning the instrument. Also melodic leaps of 7 or so frets was never a problem. What I didn't realize at the time was my right hand was falling far behind. It took me months to get my picking hand up to speed and dexterous enough to keep up with my fretting hand, and to this day if I take several days and don't flatpick at least a little bit it feels like I'm starting all over again. Oddly enough, I never have this problem with fingerstyle playing. I have no idea what all this means or even whether its important or not.
I recall being advised to try both ways (in 1970, when I was 4) and if right handed playing felt comfy to give it a try. The reason I was advised this was because lefty instruments were few (at least in rural Indiana) and there was usually an upcharge for lefty instruments from most makers.
