Hi Michael
National Reso-Phonic cones are available in the current Elderly Instruments catalogue, $50 for 9.5" and $108 for a tricone set. I've been told that there are other American suppliers on the net offering real National cones.
As an upgrade for cheapo tricones I've had good results with Amistar cones which are 1/3 the price of Nationals. Resound sells them.
AMG ll's often have bad neck sets which cause problems when you fit Ami. cones or a higher bridge. The strings touch the bridge cover!!!!!! A good workaround which dosn't mean a trip to a luthier for a reset is to put thin spring washers under the coverplate so that the securing screws pass through them. This is fiddly ( if you drop one inside you have to pull the whole lot apart) but gives a little extra clearance and totally eliminates any buzzing caused by bad coverplate fit. The slightly high coverplate doesn't look strange to me. Hope this helps.

Re cone purchasing; I recently bought 2 tricone sets & 2 single cones direct from Nat Res with no problems, & in doing so saved considerably on the UK price (even after paying import charges) - I'd certainly recommend going this route if cost is a factor; as I recall, shipping cost $16 & import c 20%, so a single tricone set should cost somewhere around £80 - 85 - mine took about a week to arrive..

I spoke to the shop who sold me the guitar yesterday, and they have arranged for the suppliers to send me a new cone, great news. Now I can play it to my hearts content assured that any funny noises aren't that damaged cone. Thanks again for all your help, I'm sure I'll still have loads of questions as I learn more about my guitar. Probably find I'll be asking about Nationals before the year is out!
