Hi again ! Calton cases are overkill for everyday use I think - too heavy. From the house + into car boot, into gig, and back home, I'm more than happy with NRP hard cases. I even have a cheap padded case (good fit though - not dreadnought size) I use for going back and forth to jam sessions or my mate's house. Hard cases if more heavy gear in car, to protect guitar from that stuff (eg. amps sliding around etc). Calton only for airport stuff.

Hiscox cases are fine for everyday use, but they are not really built as airport-proof cases for professional touring musicians. Calton cases are built for this purpose and they are the finest in the world.
Barry - shipping a guitar by post or freight is a totally different thing to checking a guitar as a piece of luggage at an airport. I get my prototype MM guitars shipped in pod type cases with a bit of cardboard wrapped around it. I have never had one arrive damaged. I would not dare check-in a guitar at an airport in one of those, it would arrive at its destination in pieces.
I do agree that unless you intend to go through airports and bump your guitars around in backstage areas that a Calton is a little bit overkill. However, once in a Calton case your guitar is always safe.....and they are beautiful cases.
The origin of this thread was not a general discussion about guitar cases, it was a question about travelling through airports with valuable guitars.
I have seen many guitars and other musical instruments damaged & destroyed because they were not in good cases. I have seen Hiscox cases looking like a shark has bitten chunks out of them, and with broken hinges and catches. I have seen many chips and knocks on Caltons, but I have NEVER seen a guitar damaged in a Calton. They are also very waterproof - I have often got them soaked in heavy rain. Ten years ago I was at Gatwick airport returning from a trip with two quite valuable guitars. Due to the usual airport delays there was a problem getting the luggage from the plane to the terminal and our luggage was left out on the runway in a very heavy flash-flood rainstorm. Both my guitars arrived in their Caltons upside down with most of the travel stickers washed away. The cases were literally drenched. I collected the guitars and immediately opened the cases to see how much water had got inside, and guess what....both guitars were bone dry!
In my mind there is no contest.
Shine On Michael.
