Just got back to Cardiff, Monday night, 21.30, after the workshop. What an amazing experience, to be able to listen to Louisiana Red talking about his experiences, of playing with Muddy Waters, Son House, Little Walter, of going with Earl Hooker's sister, and playing non-stop for 4 hours in the styles of all of his mentors, ripping the blues from his guitar and singing from his soul. It sounds like a clichee, but it's not.
Just to make the experience even deeper, in fact more surreal, I went to a local bar in Cardiff when I got back, and Robert Johnson was on the jukebox! Robert Johnson, Sweet Home Chicago,
I put some Big Bill Broonzy on, and the guy who'd put Robert Johnson on called me over. He's promoted several local blues srtists at Glastonbury, and was interested in me! He hasn't heard my slide playing obviously - though it's much better than Michael thought -really! And he's making me 3 copper slides, each made to measure. Picking them up Wednesday.
Yo - sweet Cardiffgo!
Thanks again to 2 great guitar masters, playing and talking like tai chi/chi gung/kung fu masters, demonstrating their lineage and ability.

Thank you Toom & Jukejointjohn - your words are much appreciated and I will make sure Red gets to read this thread at some point.

Hi Toom.
Which bar in Cardiff has people playing Robert Johnson and Big Bill Broonzy on the juke box...I'm a bit out of touch :-) !!
Michael, I'm going to try and catch you at Abertillary, if I can.
Out of interest, I see Johnny Winter is playing at the Globe in Cardiff.... I saw Eric Sardinas there a few weeks ago, a brilliant gig, brilliant slide at a great little venue.

I second all the comments about the Norden Farm concert & workshop. A wonderful weekend and well worth the long trip from East Yorkshire. The only down-side my mini-disk failed to record the workshop (think an upgrade is needed)! Perhaps MM & LR should be recording their conversations on the way to the gigs, there's so much oral history that should be recorded. ;D

Although I didn't get to the workshop, I do need to register my thanks for the previous night's gig. Kudos to Michael and Red for putting this all together. I recently travelled back from Seattle and I felt like you know what. Along comes Red and shames me! A shout is in order also for the two harmonica players. The guy from Sardinia (I hope someone will remind me of his name) really made that harp sing. Stevie.

The guy from Sardinia is Marco. He travelled all the way from Sardinia just to see the show!
Thanks for all the mesages. I will get Red to read this thread before he goes home. He really enjoyed the workshop and thanks everyone for coming.
Shine On Michael.

Robert Johnson on the Jukebox - at the Bar Billabong, a few doors back from the Globe concert room. Dodgy characters there - but great music!!!!
And if Michael is ever looking for a place to play, consider the Globe in Cardiff. Some great artists playing there .

I'm not sure if this has been picked up earlier, but the Abertillary gig tonight is advertised as being at the Metropole in Abertillary rather than the Mitre as stated earlier in this thread....see the link www.the-met.co.uk/events.htmlAbertillary isn't that big so I'll try there first and if it's not I'll whip round the corner to the Mitre. Hey Toom.........that pub used to be my local (around the time it became an "Australian" themed bar) sounds like the punters from then have stuck around!!

Went to the gig in Abertillary last night....really enjoyed it (once I'd found the place!)
Though the last number was great....two MM blues being played lapstyle....loved it.
Nice to have a chat with you at the end,Michael, it was brief but I could see you were pretty busy shifting CDs. I guess that with the number of CDs Red was signing at the end he wishes he was from Utah :-).
Enjoy the rest of the tour

Just a note to say thank you to everyone who came out to see the Louisiana Red & Michael Messer shows over the past three weeks. We had a great tour and enjoyed meeting all the fans and MM forum members on our travels. If anyone has photos from the shows, we would love to see them. We look forward to the next time Shine On Red & Michael

Hi Michael, Not my place but I'm sure Ian will arrange for you to see them. I am on facebook but I don't have a clue what I'm doing on it most of the time! It's one of those 'social networks' where you can keep in touch with folk and also just broadcast your thoughts to all your friends.
Anyway, the photos are well worth seeing.
As I couldn't comment on them in facebook (I take it we have to be 'friends'), let me say many thanks to Ian for sharing such really good photos that are a reminder of a truely wonderful evening.
Thanks of course to Lucy, Louisiana & you Michael, I am still feeling good even now after your performances.

Sorry Michael, I didn't realise you had to be a facebook member to view, and as Bill said if further, you want to comment, then i have to accept you as a friend. I'm going to have to reconsider where i put photos in the future - i do have a flickr account, and I'm sure that is open to everyone to view
