Hi, I was wondering if any of you could offer clarification about what might be going with this tricone:
I have seen AXL tricones as Chinese or otherwise east Asian guitars, though with a different headstock. This one looks to be more in line with what I've seen of German-built 'Continental' guitars as the seller describes, which looks to be backed up with photos.
Anyhow, I'd appreciate any thoughts and input about what's going on here, and as to whether this would be a reasonable price for such an instrument. I'm under no illusions of it competing it with custom or boutique builders' tricones.

Hi Aura
That is an AXL Tricone with exactly what you say, a Continental type of neck and headstock. This is because Continental sold much of their tooling, and probably some parts to fill up the pallets, to AXL.
My advice is to buy it ASAP. I don't do valuations or talk money, but that is a great deal. Even if it needs a bit of a tweak here and there, it is a great deal.
I would not hang around because that will go very quick, especially now that I have said what I have said.

What should I expect in terms of cones, and where would the body have manufactured?
There is a 'made in Germany' label. I've no idea if that's at all accurate on these guitars. Cheers.

Thank you for this information... and then ask the next question. I have no idea why it has that label. Shine On Michael

Didn't Amistar manufacture something for Contintal?

That guitar, in my humble opinion... was shipped to China in a box of spare parts along with everything else at the Continental workshop when they sold it all to AXL. That body is an Amistar and the neck is an unlabelled Continental one that AXL have put their logo onto. The guitar was probably assembled at AXL and I reckon the label stayed on it because nobody on the AXL shop floor would have been able to read anything on it, so it was left.
The guitar may require a neck reset because in those early days the AXL guys did not know much about building these things.
Somebody should buy it.
