This Thursday 10th of August at the Tall Trees Pub 8.30 free entry.
It’s amplified, and probably too loud so best to bring an electric guitar or bass or a pair of drum sticks .
I think I’m in the house band so at least I’ll get to play a couple of numbers at the start

Yet another ‘1st Thursday of the Month’ and another jam at the Tall Trees ( it’s under new management, and the name is about to change to something odd, it is instantly forgotten....... by me at any rate)
Bring your guitar/ harp/ Hammond organ/ triangle or what ever. Free entry , house band will play a couple of numbers at 8.30 then it could be your turn, see you there ( hopefully) Pete

Can't we just go straight into the jam Pete? 🙂🙂😉😉 One reason for a house band is to set the volume level, then there is also nervousness , we want the music to start on time. Nobody likes to start the ball rolling. Also it gives the audience an idea of what the house band can do, and someone who is new to the jam can ask to join in with the house band ( if they think we’re good enough) or go home in disgust at the low quality . On of my band has covid , so I will now just be one of the crowd.......might mean the house band is better than it would have been! Pete

Here’s a short video of some of the jam, please ignore my inexperienced Chromatic harp ( just got one and need practice!) but my friend Ranjan does a great slide solo about half way through.(about 2.20 in)

Pete,
Your friend, Ranjan has good hands, especially his right hand. Nice playing.

Yes, Ranjan is a great player. He also plays Southern Indian classical music ( on the electric guitar, may have posted some of his stuff a while ago) . He also plays 12string in a guitar ukulele duo called Light Waves ( both players have science PHDs) a delight to play with. Pete

Hi there !
Great stuff - everyone playing there (including the chromatic harp !). I liked both guitar solos too - the first guy very lyrical solo, with soul. The singer/guitarist on slide was fab - and with a lovely vibrato on his slide playing. Drummer & bass held down a solid groove. I would listen to stuff like this, instead of "guitar-hero" histrionics up the fretboard, any day !

Nicely done Pete, enjoyed that. Wish I had a local like that close to me.

This was one of the better songs from one of the better sets. As with most jams all are welcome and sometimes it maybe the first time a player is performing in front of an audience.Though I have know Ranjan for many years, I had never met the Strat or bass player but luckily they had done this sort of thing before. Pete
Went to edit something and press ‘like’ instead, though I usually like my messages, I think this is the first time I have ‘liked’ one.

The next set had me on guitar with a guitar player I had never met. We did Smokestack Lightning. I now admire Hubert Sumlin even more after trying to be play the riff correctly for 3 minutes! Though Hubert was probably in standard tuning, which might be easier to play the riff in? Pete The bass players girlfriend videoed some of the set if anyone is interested.
It would be good to see what other ‘Blues Jams’ are like, we could get a few people together and turn up and play ? Remember to take your phone/camera next time you go to one

Pete, you seem to be lucky with the jams you have in your area. We have a couple within striking distance of where I live and I will not go to them. They seem to be places where the local cliques go to show off their flash gear and Stevie Ray and Bonamassa chops at very high volume backed by Bonhamesque drummers. The final straw was one guitarist who turns up with his Marshall half stack and Les Paul turned up to 13 to get "his sound". Oh, and Sweet Home Alabama is blues did you know? Thank the Lord that my local has an acoustic jam once a month. No electrics allowed (aloud?). You're a lucky guy.

Thank the Lord that my local has an acoustic jam once a month. No electrics allowed (aloud?). You're a lucky guy. Both jams I go to have amps provided, and a stripped down drum kit, but even with a 15watt amp things often get too loud. The best of Cambridge’s jams ( or rather my favourite) was mostly acoustic ( there was a guitar amp and I would often play lap steel through it) unfortunately it stopped after covid. The new monthly Blues Jam has its moments and so far not too many over loud players. I think the house band playing at a reasonable volume helps to set the tone ( and volume) for the evening. Pete Why anyone with a knowledge of the history of the southern States and interest in Blues would want to praise Alabama I don’t know. It is a great chord progression and my band have been know to play it once a year with different words.( Werewolves of London) We will probably do it if we get a gig on the 31st of this month!

I should add that these local jams do actually supply a humongous PA with abysmal back line and stripped down drum kit.
Last time I went with my bass I took my Tech21 bass driver - they didn't have a clue as to what it was or how to plug it in and set it up.
I left after a very elongated Cream version of Crossroads having suffered 4 guitarists taking 5 x 12 bar solos each.
Dynamics and subtlety? Nae chance - flat out, head down!
Never again!
