Michael, thanks for welcoming me to the forum last month.
In a thread about Republic tricones, you mentioned “Tricones are not guitars that can be mass produced on a low budget.” Could the same be said about spider-bridge resonators?

Hi Love Style O,
My pleasure.
I don't often answer this fast, but I just sat down to look through today's activities and saw yours.
It is perfectly possible to mass produce spider bridge Dobro style guitars on a low budget. It was something Dobro did from the very early days and were very successful at it. Since then there have been some good ones come and go, but in my opinion the best around at the moment are Goldtone Paul Beard range of instruments. Regal also do some good ones, but apart from those, I don't think any that I know of are coming up to the mark.
I thought I had deactivated the Polls on this forum as they have never really been successful, so I have deleted yours and will make sure the option is deactivated.
How did you create the Poll because I cannot see the option to create one?
I hope that is helpful.

Hello Michael,
Thanks for your Lightning (pun on your MM resonator) fast reply.
About the poll. Iʼm using an Android phone, which could affect matters. I ran a test to create a new thread. The add poll button is still there. When I reply on an existing thread, thereʼs no add poll button. Hope this helps you sort out the issue.
I have further questions and comments, but Iʼll post those tomorrow.
All the best, Love Style O

Thanks for that information. I will look into it.
Please ask any questions you may have. I will be busy on Friday so will not answer your questions until sometime over the weekend.

How did you create the Poll because I cannot see the option to create one? Shine On Michael I think the option comes up when the post is created. I found this info and quoted from it... support.proboards.com/thread/666797/poll-creation-limit-post-count?page=1"there is not a one-click setting that disables the polling option. "You can disable polls in the Categories & Boards section of the Admin Panel, by editing the boards properties and changing the the "who can create polls" to Custom" Best, H

I had already just set all mine to "Staff", but thanks for the heads-up H because for the life of me I couldn't remember where to find the setting. I originally figured it out when one young turk wanted to blather our little quiet backwater over FacePage and its ilk.

You're welcome. Back to the original topic then ... I've wondered about budget spiderbridge resonators as well.

Here you go... Getting the thread back on track. This is my 1932 Dobro. Generally known by collectors as "Cyclops" Dobros for obvious reasons. These were built as budget guitars in the Dobro range and to do so they cut as many corners as possible, which included only drilling one sound hole and therefore only fitting one tea strainer. The tops of these guitars are extraordinarily thick at 10mm. This one has a stamped lug cone and an eight leg spider, and it sounds beautiful. Shine On Michael

This is the model that Gibson/Dobro should make to re-launch Dobro from its inactivity, Dobro has a great back catalogue if only someone at Gibson/Dobro knew.

I noticed that the Dobro cone has a couple of holes . I did post a thread about a 70s Dobro cone that I have never used, that has 4 similar holes. Any thoughts on the sound or usefulness of such a cone? Pete
Sorry to have gone off thread

Any thoughts on the sound or usefulness of such a cone? Pete Sorry to have gone off thread I think it was probably designed with cost cutting in mind. So rather than make two holes in the wood and fit two tea strainers (AKA Dobro glasses), they made some sound holes in the cone. These cones don't sound as full as a spun cone and the one sound hole in the body does reduce the volume, but the overall sound is very warm and sweet. I know people that swear by stamped lug cones with four holes as the best around. Robbie Mc' has a Dobro with a four leg spider and stamped lug cone that he loves to play. I think he always uses it plugged in. The cone you have would have been made by John Quaterman. I don't know whether they were replacements for old guitars, or if they fitted them in new guitars. Michael, I believe that your guitar would be a Model 27 Cyclops, as it has no binding or sandblasted "carving". There was a Model 45 that had a "rosewood" finish and top and back binding, and a Model 60 that was a cyclops version of the Model 65 with the sandblasted carving. The Model 27s generally had the thicker top as they would normally have no well. As a model 60 would have retailed for $60 back in the early 30s, it would not have been one of the budget guitars.

I am sure that you are correct about the model number. Dobros are not a subject I know as well as Nationals and it can be quite complicated. Thank you for correcting me.
