Hi All I’m Tony from the Uk I’ve been playing regular guitar for a long time now but only just recently started to get into slide guitar I’ve ordered a get from Mr Messer I’ve made a short video of me playing some slide of people don’t mind having a little nose an giving some feedback on what I can do to improve my pitch tone and technique etc that would be great in the video I only have a cheap yammy acoustic I think I’m in open D the sound isn’t great as my Phine level kept messing up
Thanks Tony

Well it sounded good to me, but I'm a long way from being anyone to advise on technique because what you posted there is more musical within a slide guitar sense than anything I've ever put together, certainly in the near on 14 years I've had a resonator Tony.

Hi Tony!
Welcome to the forum.
Your playing sounds great. You have a good sense of timing and your phrasing is good too. There are of course areas that you can improve on to get a better tone and to make the notes sing out, but I think for the moment until you get your new guitar just keep on doing what you're doing. Keep playing and listening to slide players, maybe learn a song or two, rather than just noodling. Not that there's anything wrong with noodling, we all do it, but a song or a tune will make you focus more.
Great stuff!
Shine On Michael

Thanks for the feed back guys an yeh Michael of course man that’s me after a few hours of just learning a few diff little things my main aim is to try to get a good sound an not just hissy glassy scratchy crap and learning to have a finger behind the slide so it’s not ringing out an loads extra noise all in good time but the feedback is good an gives me hope of not just making noise and annoying my wife 🤣🤣 I’m using a little cheap Earnie ball glass slide it’s so lite and a medium gauge string hopefully I can get a decent slide an the real will have a heavier gauge on it also bring on the lightening

Not much to add, it’s obvious you know your way around the guitar. Your playing is in tune and right on the beat, big strings and a heavy slide will help give a more solid tone ( though your present tone is pretty good). Try to find a more experienced slide player to help you advance, there are lots of YouTube instructional videos that are not as good are you are already, so choose carefully if you go down that root!* Pete
PS: you are in open G not D * I guess that could be ‘ route ‘ but this is roots music.

Livelyjelly yeh what place can I get a good quality slide please ?
Pete it was one or the other D or G I guess lol
I wish I was around other roots players who I could learn and steal from but most of my musical life I’ve always been on my own really same as now I’d love to be around other players who played slide or even just regular gtr sadly I’m a billy no mates Wer I’m currently living out of the uk but Spotify an other places of music is a good source and on the plus side you can’t Wer tapes out constantly rewinding them now we live the digital age of the web 🤣🤣

Hey Tony
I've always got a slide for sale if you're interested but in terms of recommendations:
In alphabetical order
Ben’s Bars & Slides (Ben Burrow) - metal Daddyslide (Jan Simon) - metal Diamond Bottlenecks (Ian McWee) - glass Tokyo (forum member Anthony) - glass
My advice is don't get bogged down in trying every slide under the sun like me. A couple of glass (one spare in case you're clumsy) and one metal should be more than enough. Yes they do create slightly different sounds and levels of sustain etc but whatever you use you will invariably end up sounding like 'you', which judging by your playing in the above video ain't no bad thing at all!!! 😊 It's all in the hands 🤘

One thing I wish I had worked on when I started playing was going for one tuning to another. After playing in open G for a year or so I suddenly found other tunings were available, but by then it was too late and I have stuck to G ever since. Another thing I discovered much later was that D and G tunings were in fact very similar. (Tony may already know this, I wish I had when I started but they were pre-interweb days the information was hard to find if you are as lazy as me!) As you can see on the 5th in D you get the same notes as the first 5 open strings of G, just with an extra G on top. Many phrases and chord shapes are very similar, just moved across one string. Pete

Good morning All
Thanks for the kind comments an the diagram of G and D, yeh I’ve been messing around in both of them even open C a little bit too, not sure if this is allowed tho lol I found a video of Michael and Robbie Macintosh doing a Bob Dylen cover I think it’s the best version I’ve heard of this tune ( buckets of rain ) it’s so so nice man so I’m going to learn that version, as of yet I’ve only been trying to get a few little slide kicks if that what we call them down mainly for the technical side of slide playing an tone I have not learned any actual songs that incorporate slide yet also I work away from home out the country in the Middle East so I’m basically on my own when it comes to playing my guitar but that’s cool that way I don’t offend anyone’s ears when learning lol
Hope you all have a boss day 👌👊
