Hello All,
Need a consensus of opinion:
Would you guys buy a 1930 steel body O with seem repaired, needing a neck reset and heat straightening for just under $2000 USD?
I played the guitar and it came from the family of the guy who made it for National.
Repairs could run close to a grand USD.
Best, Malcolm

Thanks Al,
It's pretty trashed as it is; maybe all steel and its sounded good. It would be my second project National at the same time! The other is a 34 Duolian which needs a second replacement neck.
Best, Malcolm

Hi there ! Pictures please !! Do you have the serial number and/or pictures ? (to assess condition) I have an all-steel bodied Style O (serial no. S518) and it is amazing ! Bought it for around $2000 about 5yrs ago on ebay. It needed a neck reset and new fretboard (and my luthier, Steve Evans, of Beltona resonator instruments, installed a hidden adjustable truss rod). Out of the 10 or so Nationals that I have owned, it's got to be my favourite. I'd say BUY IT !!!! Does it have the birds-eye maple neck (kind of looks mottled) ? The early ones seemed to have this. (see picture of mine) How about the back Hawaiian scene - is it the Variation 1 or 2 etch pattern ? Variation 1 (on the left) has lots of clouds on the top section, but otherwise v similar to the Variation 2 etching pattern (on the right). Attachments:

It's listed on reverb as a salvage guitar. It was locally owned were I live so I had first dibs on it and got to play it. Go to reverb, It is on there for $2200 usd or best offer. I do not think it suffered from any shipping damage. It has a large bottom seam that was re welded and some work done to it that the original owner could not specify. It should go to Marc here in the states or Steve in GB for repairs for whoever ends up with her. Serial # S 1196. Maybe all steel or mix of brass and steel. I had too weak of a magnet with me when I tested it. It's up for grabs!!
P.S. Snakehips: great playing on youtube.
Best,
Malcolm

Hi again !
I can’t find the Style O on Reverb. Can you provide a link, please ?
With a serial number past S1000, I seriously doubt t will have a steel body. Possibly coverplate though, or possibly mixed metals for the body BUT I seriously doubt it would be all steel.
I’d snap it up at the price mentioned if it was all-steel though.

Hi again !
Thanks for the link - I couldn't find it.
Well, that guitar looks a bit beyond saving, bar having very un-cosmetic damage stabilised only.
Also, you can clearly see the brass metal showing where the nickel-plating has been lost on the front&sides, and the rounded edges of the back. The coverplate may well be steel though - but that's all at most.
I'd be giving that guitar a miss, personally.

Hi again !
Is there a brass strip of metal soldered/welded inside the guitar body across the broken sections of the guitar body's side, to hold it together ? Maybe I'm seeing a layer of brass inside the guitar sides (at the open cracks in the guitar body sides) ??? That's what made me think the sides (and thus the front) is brass. (You know the front & sides are one continuous piece of sheet metal stamped into the front & sides shape ?)

I put in a low offer and somebody wanted a guitar project more than me. Back was probably brass. I read a reliable source that had mixed metal style O's up to serial # 1500. I am a old Les Paul guy from way back, don't claim to know much about Nationals. Had a Dobro All Electric from 33 that was the best sounding electrified chicago style guitar on the planet. It's sadly a museum piece now.
Thank you for all of the help!
Mo
