Hi, I've just bought a 2010 MM Lightning, and am really pleased with it. It has a really clear, sweet sound, which reminds me of the sound of Mike Dowling's burnt National.
It was one of the guitars set up by Robin, of Busker Guitars, and has been re-set up by MotoMusic in Cardiff.
It's got D'Addario 12s on it, so I'll change them soon, though as I haven't played a resonator for about 5 years, it'll take a while for my fingers to get used to the heavier strings.

Welcome to the forum Tully. You've picked a terrific guitar, great to play, great to look at! Wait 'til you put some MM's from Newtone on it, she'll really come alive. (Or maybe your one is a he?!) I'd recommend 15's, big round sound. Enjoy! Let us know how you get on.
Best wishes to you all, John

Hi Tully, my Lightening has Newtone MM Monel 15s on, tuned down to Open D, and a Diamond Bottleneck; it’s a hard combination to better. Enjoy the Lightening.

Thanks for the replies.
My guitar's definitely an "it"! I've got used to the action now and am looking forward to getting the heavier strings.
I've used Newtone strings in the past and they're excellent, but as I don't play in public I use either Elixir resonator strings or Elixir mediums, as they last much longer.
I'm enjoying playing the guitar much more than my last resonator, an Icarus single cone. I bought that as it looked so beautiful and sounded so good played by Roger Hubbard in his "cavern".
I have a Diamond Redhouse bottleneck, that I got in the early 2000s from the London Resontor Centre, with a NRP tricone. I still have the bottleneck. It's a keeper!
I've been down the different resonator for different tunings route before - and ended up with 3 - for D, D minor and G, plus an acoustic guitar for D, G, DADGAD, and 2 more for slide. I've got a Furch 12 string, Seagull and Furch 6 strings and now the Lightning. That's enough for me.

That's odd. I find Newtones last forever, and like pressing a Biro on paper, I'm pretty hard on strings too. I put a set of Nickel Masters on one of my home made Teles when I finished putting it together some seven years ago, and they still play and sound pretty much as good as new. They are not my favourite strings, but they are the ones I use because cost divided by life multiplied by guitars becomes more a manageable feast, and they are both competitively priced and pretty good strings to say the least. As was said, it's all a bit subjective.
