Had a look on 12th fret website. If it's the same tricone it is pictured uderstrung with pins on the tailpiece ala early Nationals. Might shine a different light on the matter. Lots of forum members will know if this was how earlier Beltona guitars were made.

Lots of forum members will know if this was how earlier Beltona guitars were made. I just looked. It does not have an early stud-type tailpiece, those are the ball ends of the strings sitting as they do on an understrung guitar. It looks like the tailpiece has been raised at the front to accommodate the under stringing. It would be a calculated guess that if it is set up and playable as an understrung instrument, this guitar requires a neck reset. It was not expensive, 2750 CAD (1600 GBP) is a reasonable price. The guitar was under strung when 12th Fret received it 2 years ago on consignment. They replaced the cones and set it up over the top. I am the one who asked them to under string it before it shipped being a dumb ass. I will proceed with caution and post mucho photos.

John, You are absolutely correct. What I meant was that if the guitar has been set up so the string height and playability are correct, then the neck angle is all wrong and it requires a neck reset to get it right.

Malcolm, If the guitar needs some work, just send it to Marc Schoenberger and he will make it exactly as it should be. Marc is the best on your side of the pond. www.nationalguitarrepair.comShine On Michael.

I received the guitar in good order. It is in amazing condition, neck has been reset at some point. I changed the strings to present over the top, one string at a time. The action is perfect for both types of playing and it sounds good with Martin Monel 13-56. Just BB Q chicken for the senior Jacks and off to play until my fingers start to bleed. Will have picks and hopefully a video tomorrow.
Many thanks to all who responded to my plea.
Cheers,

Marc is a good friend of mine. He reset the neck on a 33 Dobro All Electric many years ago and I have his last Vita Uke that he made. I just got off the phone with Marc.
I have had a very weird day today. A month ago I bought a 34 14 fret Duolian with an early 2000's reneck and it arrived at my house with the heal cracked off and two hairline cracks just above the heal. I had Fedex pick it up and the seller refunded me. I helped establish a claim and as I was walking out the door today it was sitting at my door step, sent back to me from the original mail boxes picked up by mistake having crisscrossed from NY to Las Vegas twice. I spoke to Marc about him renecking it; if I can score it as a salvage. So that was my day; a Rolls Royce Triplate and a in need 34 Duco.
Cheers

[attachment id="7982" thumbnail="1" The next step when you have a Beltona is to get another, knowing where to stop is the bigger issue Lee Attachments:

Just a question guys….so a honeydipper fron Gretch or similar guitar have a tailpiece that the strings come from underneath and it works perfectly…..so what’s the deal, I’m kinda 🤔 confused… Understringing a resonator guitar is a quick fix done by dealers when the geometry is wrong. It has been done because there is not enough break angle on your guitar to put the strings through the tailpiece correctly, so by under stringing it they are able to create a break angle from tailpiece to bridge saddle. This puts an uneven pull and too much pull on the bridge saddle and over time it will pull the bridge back towards the tailpiece and in turn it will damage the cone, because the bridge and biscuit will tip downwards and dent the cone, eventually causing it to collapse. However, on a Gretsch guitar the cone is pretty tough, unlike original Nationals, new Nationals and various other brands. On a guitar with a more refined cone, under stringing will 100% damage the cone, whether it will on yours is something that I cannot be sure about. What you do with that information is your choice, but those are the facts. Shine On Michael
