My friend, Michael Watts, interviewing the wonderful guitarist, Derek Gripper.
Derek is well worth checking out, and so is Michael, but today this is about Derek. A South African musician that among other things, plays kora music on his guitar.
Shine On Michael.

excellent playing in second video. looking at aftermarket pick up at bridge, sounds too good to be piezo. small microphone? makes me wonder if mic on stand was used for this recording, or in tandem with unknown bridge unit.

Lovely stuff! Wonderful playing and a fascinating interview - I really enjoyed the bit about having more or less started from the view that guitars are not very successful instruments that need reinventing only to discover that good traditional ones work brilliantly…
Here’s a couple of video lessons in which he offers guidance on getting underway towards Jarabi on guitar, one clear step at a time from novice to beginning to improvise - I think they’re great!

(Dyn G… ??) They’re “moving coil” transducers… Re. mics - Derek Gripper responds to this discussion with some info on his amplification choices circa 2010… link

Just listened to some of Michael Watts' album Vetiver. He can play too can't he!!! More than that he can write. I don't know where I got it from but I could've sworn I looked him up in the past following watching some of his guitar reviews for North American Guitars and found him doing pop singer-songwriter stuff with a full band and pretty slick music videos, and a tour supporting Simply Red (nowt wrong with that!) but now I can't find anything except for really interesting interviews with folks such as Martin Simpson and Al Pettaway, and of course him playing his lovely acoustic music as a solo artist with no singing. Am I going mad? Did I dream this?
Michael, your his mate and might know, did Mr Watts ever do radio friendly pop stuff?

Scrap that, I've looked into the history of the North American Guitar Company London, and it seems they employed two youngish handsome dapper chaps to present the videos! Sorry to both Michael and Ben 🙈 Here's the guy (Ben Montague) that I meant:

Lewis, you are confusing Michael Watts with Ben Montague. Ben did the pop stuff and toured opening for Simply Red. At that time Ben and I were both with the same booking agency. Ben is the son of the founder/owner of TNAG, Robert Montague. Ben now runs the company and does it very well. When Michael Watts was working there I did a few videos for them and also did some great gigs that were put on by them. I haven’t done anything with them since I did that gig with Robbie McIntosh.
Oh… and just to clarify, they never employed me to do anything.

Haha that's what I thought I'd said 🤣 Cheers for confirming though.
I'm now going down a very dangerous Michael Watts YouTube rabbit hole! Eek.
Best, Lew
