Loads of pickups available for resos but I am on a very tight budget. Noticed a few options for ‘stick on’ piezo type things. Giving it some thought as a temporary measure so I can get used to playing live again. Anybody got any suggestions? I don’t want to fart on drilling holes or messing about with the biscuit until I’ve got the money to get something worth paying a professional to do a proper job on it since I’m as technically minded as a dead haddock.

As you will find if you search this forum , you are not the first to want a piezo that will give your reso an electric voice. The most successful at this was the Highlander system, now no longer available. Any piezo will give some sort of sound, getting the full sound of the cone is difficult. Most will recommend a mic ( the Sure SM57 is the most often used). I have tried many cheap piezo units but I think they need to ‘ flex’ a little, and on the biscuit they are ‘shaken not stirred ‘ .
I now use magnetic pickups, they create a different sound to the cone but are simple and cheap Pete

Agreed.
Highlander pickups were the only decent acoustic reso pickup for National type guitars (IMHO). Unfortunately, Highlander closed their business for good last year, due to retirement, with no one to buy out the business & keep it going. I would have thought that was the best opportunity ever for a rival pickup company to buy up the business.
External microphone for solo gigs, or a magnetic pickup if you want an easy plugged in sound (less reso sounding though).
Don't waste money on cheaper piezo/bug type pickups.

Thanks chaps. I’ll put a few bob aside and get a sixtus I think. Do they stick to the top or do they need screwing in?

On most resos the pickup will stick on, and often the cable will go across the top and into the F hole. A jack can then be fitted in one of the ‘holes’ of the F holes( assuming it is a National style guitar) or a hole drilled in the side ( like a Les Paul or Tele electric) if you don’t mind an extra hole in your guitar. Hi, I have Sixtus on my Goldtone squareneck , I fixed it on with Blu Tac about 5 years ago and its still there. I ran the cable through the lower screen and drilled a hole near the rear strap button for the jack. Has worked very well for me and the pick up sounds great!

There is a magnetic mount option if you have a steel bodied guitar

12 Bar Blues make a great Reso pickup for a very reasonable price. Great people to work with.
