Hi , I was hoping somebody may be able to give me some advice. I decided to set up my Mexican 60s style strat for a mix of fingerstyle / slide which has spent last 20 years in a case. I have an MM blues and MM blues 28 which both have MM newtone 15s on, so I decided to go with the Newtone MM slide classics 15s on my strat. I've just realised when I got the guitar out that normally you would cut the strings first and insert inside the split post. I was wondering if there is a way of putting the strings on without cutting them first. If there isn't, I was hoping for some advice on what strings would be suitable for this type of split post tuner playing slide / fingerstyle. Thanks , Mike

Hi Mike,
I have those tuners on my 12 string National Havana. All you need to do is to bend a right angle into the string before you cut it. I use a pair of pliers to do this and I usually leave around 1.5 to 2cm to go down into the tuner. Maybe check the depth of the tuner hole first. I have done this right angle bend numerous times and never lost a string yet.
Having said all that - your MM Newtone Slide Classics are wound on a hexagonal core, so they shouldn't unravel. If you want to stay on the safe side of things, bend the right angle before cutting. It makes it much easier to drop the string down the tuner hole. (I guess there must be a more technical term than "tuner hole")
I hope that helps.

As soon as the string is bent the windings seem stable, I just removed a set of (almost new ) MMs to work on a guitar and replaced the same strings with no problems , ( though it’s always a bit of a fiddle to reuse old strings these were only a week old) Pete
PS: I thought the tuner hole was in the headstock before the tuner was fitted? I will be using ‘Axial capstan bore’ from now on, but I’m not sure where.

Thanks Pete , that's good to know. I had started to wonder if I could fit MM resonator strings by bending the strings at right angles before cutting. all the best , Mike
