A couple of nice moments with Bob Dylan on his 80th birthday. BOB DYLAN - 80 Today, May 24th 🎩 Dylan and Johnny Cash, two old friends, backstage at the Bob Dylan 30th Anniversary Concert, Madison Square Garden, New York City - 10.16.92 I cropped the original square for posting. Maybe a new print series? The original 35mm full frame is currently a popular gallery print. This picture was used inside the concert CD, LP and DVD package, plus some stage pictures for the back cover. ©📷 Photograph by Alan MESSER Bob Dylan in a recording studio in London, Bond Street, 1965, with session musicians The Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton. You can hear Bob Dylan say to Hugh Flint (on drums) "You wanna do the count, or should I?" to which Hugh replies in a Mancunian accent "If you will" Bob: "Ah 1,2,3 pause" Band: "do it in time! " Hugh: "You haven't worked much with bands have you?" Dylan: "I don't need any count, you just come in." This may be the only remaining recording of this session which at the time was several hours long. Shine On Michael

The most important influence on more areas of my life than I can spell out here, since I first came across him by accident on a BBC TV concert. I was just killing time waiting for the late night bulletin from the Le Mans 24 hour. 10.50pm 19th June 1965, I was 14 and he's been in my life ever since.

I do not want to sour the mood but musically I am not Bobs biggest fan, but I appreciate his lyrical contribution and have one album that I really like Oh Mercy with Daniel Lanois in the producers chair and this was around the Wilburies era which is where he is anchored for me.
That aside a few years ago we could not resist one of his paintings.
Happy Birthday Bob.

I'm much the same, Mr. Zimmerman's songwriting abilities are well proven but as a performer / singer he leaves me stone cold. I maintain his most memorable work often seems to have been immortalised by other performers. Many happy returns anyway Bob. Some folks like you just make splash, the majority don't.

Before you close it - picture this: Summer 1963, boys school seniors and intermediates official social dance, girls invited over from their school for the evening, dancing to pop records which stops for the buffet. A school prefect sneeks over to the record player, takes off the Bobby Vee record and replaces it with the Freewheelin' album. Staff and girls throw up their arms in horror but 10% of the attendees are instantly converted. The said school prefect becomes a hero to the minority but is ostracized by the majority. The times changed. Happy Birthday, Bob.

It's worth bearing in mind that before Dylan,' folk music' was the Kingston Trio & Peter Paul & Mary, pretty anaemic stuff - when a schoolmate lent me the first 4 Dylan albums, c'64, I was very taken with the 1st two - 'Bob Dylan' & 'Freewheelin' -( less so with 'Times' & 'Another Side of' ) - the rawness & drive of them was a breath of fresh air,( though we in the UK had had Donegan to prime us ), & certainly did a lot to get me out of the mod dancehalls, & checking out the local folk club, thereby engendering a lifelong love of acoustic/roots/early blues musics - very grateful for that. Then we had Davy Graham & Bert Jansch..

Pickers Ditch - I expect you're aware of the story that Bob Dylan under the name of Elston Gunnn (3ns) played piano for Bobby Vee on a few dates in 1959. It didn't last long - BD would only play in C.
And ricks, I think there was a lot of pretty full blooded folk music around in the US and UK that Dylan used, stole from freely, built on and moved on from pretty quickly. It's a fascinating relationship. And like you, it was Dylan that sent me to the local folk club and started my life long exploration of exactly the areas of folk and blues you mentioned.

Happy Birthday Bob. He always said he was not the voice of his generation! But he could articulate in words what we all thought, in a way that was so incisive and profound. He is mega in my opinion!
