Hello all,
I’m after a little advice. I’m going to build an electric solid body resonator and wondered what cone would be best to get for it?
Ideally I’d like to buy from the UK, I would have happily of used Thomann etc but with the whole EU thing you pay so much in fees.
I’ve seen Golden Gate and Viking ones for sale but no idea if they’re any good. So any other places to look or brands to go for?
Cheers for the help.
Adam

Hi there !
I'd recommend only a Continental cone, or a NRP "Hot Rod" cone, nothing else.

Not sure - MM might chime in on this ? I am sorry but I don't sell cones, or any accessories really. I just send stuff to MM Guitar owners and friends. Cones are too difficult to pack, unless I have some special boxes made like hat boxes, and it's just not what I do. I have no idea where one would buy a Continental cone in the UK. Thomann is your best bet for spares, but only get National or Continental, the rest are useless. Regarding the costs involved with shipping and import taxes; yes it is a problem, but this is not a place to discuss politics. Shine On Michael

Shine On Michael Just to clarify, Its not my intention to bring up politics, just telling people I ideally don’t want to order outside of UK and pay import fees to better explain what I’m looking for. Thanks for the advice though, it’s much appreciated. Now I have a good place to start looking. 👍

Dolando, I wasn't suggesting you were, but these things can easily kick off.
The problem with cones is they're so darn fragile to pack and post.
Have a hunt around and if you really can't get one, maybe I will consider making a box and sending you one.

Viking and Golden Gate cones are both stocked by Hob Goblin Music , Viking cones look like Continental and are not too expensive Golden Gate look like Korean cones which are dull sounding (though better looking). Pete
Are you making from scratch or using a donor guitar?
Posting cone used to be easy, you just bought a tin of biscuits large enough, nowadays plastic and cardboard have replaced tin.

The problem with cones is they're so darn fragile to pack and post. Shine On Michael Here is my most used cone, it’s a Continental that was damaged and returned to Busker. I use it during most builds as it doesn’t matter if I drop it or it gets a dent from a screwdriver, a new cone can then be used when I am happy with the guitar.. Usually kept in this biscuit tin, I did have 2, and thought I would buy another every Christmas but have found none for sale the last few years. With the saddle and biscuit removed there is an inch or so space for bubble wrap, I’m sure it would make a great container for postage.z Pete

Hi Pete,
Thanks for that idea. It is a good way to send a cone, but I don't buy biscuits, so there are no tins here.
Also, I don't mind the occasional favour, but I don't sell accessories. I just occasionally help someone out.
I have offered to help Dolando if he can't find a cone elsewhere :-)
Shine On Michael.

Hi Pete, Thanks for that idea. It is a good way to send a cone, but I don't buy biscuits, Shine On Michael. “Don’t buy biscuits” ? What do you put on your cones? I do have a lot of damaged cones and would also let Dolando have one for the postage, it is quite useful to have one you can throw in and out without worrying about damage. Pete

Thanks for the information. Much appreciated, I may go for the Viking cone to start out as it’s not too expensive and will give me a good proof on concept etc. Then I can go national or continental on the next one. Appreciate the offer to send me one though. Might be just as much to post that as it is to buy the Viking, I will keep it in mind though. It’s a scratch build, it’s my take on a parlour resonator/les Paul. Here’s one I have already built. Adam
