As usual I was so eager to put the guitar back together I took no pics of the process.
I've attached a rough diagram of mounting position relative to the cone .To hold the capsule I used one of those clips that keeps a mic cable attached to a mic stand shaft. Looking at the guitar with the cover plate screw closest to the mag pick up as 12 o'clock, the capsule is at 8 o'clock . I experimented with it mounted on the treble side at about 2 o'clock and liked it best where it is now. FYI on my earlier Telecoustic build I mounted a mic capsule under the cone facing up , it was built similarly to yours with a platform rather than a sound well. You can hear that on the Soundclick clips. This has got me thinking about what I can do with my 1133. My idea is to mount the mic. capsule under the cone (easier to do as I only have to take the back cover off) and running the lead out of one of the sieve holes to minimize any irreversable mods to the guitar. The question is will I need some sort of a pre amp or eq balancer? Your thoughts and comments would be most welcome. Cheers, PD.

I mounted a DPA levalier mic under the cone in my brass MMB but it was way too boomy PD. MM and one or two others warned me in advance, but I tried it anyway. Things improved immensely when I relocated it underneath the cover plate. It lost all bass response so I moved it to the bass side under the cover plate and it isn't too bad at all now, but to be objective I had to locate the amp in another room otherwise the sound was "wet" with the unamplified reso sound. It follows that such a project was pointless for a bedroom warrior like me, but it satisfied proof of concept for me.

PD, There was a time in the 1980s when I tried "almost" everything to amplify and gig with my 1133. The problem with 1133s is that the best of the sound comes out the back. A PZM on the inside of the back coverplate was okay-ish, but after various experiments with C-Ducer and Barcus Berry types of devices I settled with, guess what... yep, a Shure SM57. Then after a while I retired the guitar to just being a home and studio instrument. It had a couple of outings in the '90s when we did National Breakdown Service shows and Angelina Grimshaw used it. A Highlander iP-1X would do it perfectly. I should have fitted one, but by the time I started using Highlanders the guitar was permanently at home. Hmmmm..maybe, just maybe if one turns up... Happy to chat with you about 1133s sometime :-) Shine On Michael

Although I'll readily take your word for it that the sound comes largely from the back on an 1133, surely you didn't have the mic pointing to the back of the instrument somehow?

Thanks for the replies - you're right SM57 out front is the way to go. Tried an SM57 capsule in the back using a Sansamp: it was not good - boomy and/or quacky. I think a lot of it has to do with the distance between the cone and the mic., probably the room acoustics too and I'm not of an age or inclination to mess about any more for might just be a few numbers in a one off gig. ...however, it gave me a chance to make some noise with the 1133 which my bass playing son calls 'Dads 6 String Banjo'.

"DAD'S SIX STRING BANJO" ..... I would ask your bass playing son to change his tune or move out! Shine On Michael

Hi there !
In years to come, we might be buying used reso guitars if they have Highlanders in them, JUST to get the pickup, & then sell on the actual guitar !!!

The mic capsule needs a pre amp of some kind to bring the level up . The mic capsule idea worked well in my case I think because it's a solid body guitar so the mic is hearing just the cone, i.e., no boom from a full acoustic body.

The 1133 is a 'solid' body guitar, too...
Hence my interest.
