Sylvain Sylvain (New York Dolls) died today, he was 69. My brother, Alan Messer, took this picture of the New York Dolls at The Old Grey Whistle Test, BBC TV, London - November 1973. I saw the New York Dolls that same week as Alan took this photo in November 73. They played at the Rainbow Room, Biba, Kensington High Street, London. It was a wild night and a lot of fun. I remember the room was packed with rock'n'roll royalty. I met some of the band after the show and they were lovely people. Silvain Mizrahi >RIP Shine On Michael

Ahh, Biba. How many remember the heavy Mary Quant eye shadow, the opulent gold and black colour scheme, the proliferation of ostrich feathers, the sweeping curled staircases, and Derry & Toms' roof garden? Kensington Market and then a stroll around Biba's? Heady days. Sigh. What do we have today then? Three decades of hoodies with backsides hanging out. Damn right I've got dem blues ...
Biba re-emerged in Maddox Street as a limp and pale shadow of its former majesty. Went there once just to see. Never again.
As for The New York Dolls- undoubtedly impressive, although not my cup of chai then or now, but wholly appropriate for Biba at that time.

I was not interested in the New York Dolls then, or later, but it was a great night in that amazing venue, the Rainbow Room. Shine On Michael

Friends of mine did the design work for Biba and my brother in law revamped the rainbow room. They had their drawing offices on the roof garden and the ducks from the pond used to wander in for snacks! My best gig was Bill Haley and the Comets with the house band Kilburn and the High roads opening! Wot a night!
Best wishes to you all, John
