Hi everyone, some more advice please. I'm going to put some new strings on the Kalamazoo today, Newtone heritage 13 15s. Never look forward to pulling those pins out! I'd like to lemon oil the fretboard but I'm not sure what it's made of, my reading says the neck is mahogany but can't find a specific reference to the fretboard. Just wanted to check it wasn't maple which I understand doesn't like lemon oil! Any tips and advice appreciated as always. Came across a station on Alexa this morning on Spotify called dark was the night, very good. Best wishes to you all, John

John, That fretboard looks like rosewood to me, so it's fine to do with lemon oil. Chestnut Lemon Oil is the one luthiers use. Shine On Michael

Thanks Michael, I've got some Dunlop 65 ultimate which I think was recommended on a previous thread. I've oiled the tuners and they seem to be working well, now to pull those pins!
Best wishes to you all, John

Job done! Pins out and back in with no problems. Tuners oiled up and working properly. Oiled the fretboard and lightly polished the body, looking good. The big difference is the sound! Must have got used to the old strings sound. New strings make it sound like a new guitar (in a good way) that was spectacular. Anyone putting off changing strings get on with it! Hopefully you'll be as pleased as I am.
Best wishes to you all, John.

Re:oil on m/heads. Hopefully you were very sparing with the oil. If it gets onto the wood , especially end grain, like the post holes, it can stain and make future repairs difficult. Pete

Yes I was very sparing. Learned my lesson years ago with my Hornby OO locos!

One drop of this on the cog before detuning and retuning, and then dab it with tissue paper to remove any excess. Perfect! Shine On Michael

Some 'lemon oil' is a mineral oil with odour or a small amount of pure lemon oil added. Check the ingredients if you can - there's one called Lem-oil which is possibly a mixture. I got some pure lemon oil from an aromatherapy supplier on eBay. I don't know if it makes any difference apart from upsetting Trading Standards.
As we head deep into rum and butter toffee territory...
Cheers

Hi Jono, I'm very happy with them. I use them on all my elderly wood guitars. This new set I put on yesterday really brought the KG14 back to life. Plus you have reduced tension on their poor old necks and tops! Lol!
Best wishes to you all, John

I always like to have low tension strings on it as it's such a lightly built (and old!) guitar. Currently using John Pearce Silk and Bronze 12's which sound great.
