Hi, help needed. I recently got lucky and got a used National “O”. It has a McIntyre pickup installed, which I wasn’t bothered about, but it does need new strings. The ones it came with were nickel (electric). I was going to put phosphor bronze on, but now wonder should I go for nickel? Any advice greatly received. Thanks 😊

Hi karateguy. Welcome to the forum. I'm not an expert on particular pickups but i do use phospher bronze strings on reso's with a variety of pu's and had no problem. Some members might chip in with advice about specific details on specific pu's Many members regard the Michael Messer Newtone range of reso strings as the go to choice, they can be ordered online and are definitely worth checking out. Hope this helps. Feel free to post pictures of the guitar, we all like a drool! Lol! Best wishes to you all,John

Hi Karateguy,
No, you do not need nickel strings. The McIntire is a feather-type piezo that sits in the biscuit, so it will work with any strings.
I hope that is helpful.

Shine On Michael As MM says You only need ‘electric ‘ strings with magnetic pickups, and even then some pickups are voiced to boost the 3rd string ( often a little quite with magnetic pickups) or reduce signal for the 2nd string ( often too loud) so sometimes you can use bronze strings on magnetic pickups. Pete Some also prefer nickel strings on Resos, so put on what you want

Thanks Guys, that’s really helpful. I look forward to getting some new strings on it. I’m slowly getting there on my reso journey. I had a Vintage AMG first - that sadly ended with a neck break ( I had it fixed, but let it go very cheaply), then an Amistar Tricone (which I still have), but the National is my dream guitar ( though it’s the 12 fret, and I suppose my real dream is the14 fret?).
