Hi Michael, This may be a daft question (which was laughed at by a North East based Luthier) but here goes...
I have a Beard Decophonic model 27 spider bridge resonator which sounds wonderful and looks great. I got it with the Nashville pickup already fitted by Beard and found the JD pedal on Gumtree UK for a great price. The only niggle l have, is that the neck is a bit slim for me (it’s by no means skinny). I’ve been playing Nationals since the 2000’s and have become addicted to chunky necks. It has a bolt on neck apparently and l was wondering if you or anyone knows if it is possible to add a bit of thickness to the neck by adding some sort of V shaped wooden strip or similar. Although l favour the NRP boat shape, a thick V shape would be acceptable.
Or, can you recommend a good Conehead therapist 🤪? Regards Chris

Hi slidefever, play it lots and you'll soon forget about any 'niggles' you have now! The Aura J D pedal is a bit nice isn't it.
Best wishes to you all, John

Hi Richard and John, Thanks for the advice; l’m leaning that way with just getting used to it. The reason being, the sound is so good and the JD pedal is the icing on the cake, particularly for recording. I’d heard reports that the Nashville piezo on its own wasn’t very good. Well, not in this case. The piezo sounds great on it’s own. Maybe the bad reports were down to who had fitted the pickup. Anyway, thanks for responding to my post. Regards Chris

Don't forget Chris, whatever you do to the neck WILL alter the sound.

As the distance between your fingers and thumb is reduced on a thin neck, could a thick piece of tubing on the thumb make your brain think the neck is thicker? Pete
(Yet another odd idea)

Spend some time with a banjo or a mandolin and then revisit the Beard. It's not as silly as it sounds on the face of it, and is definitely not intended to be flippant.
e&oe ...

Combine Pete's 2 ideas and you'll probably have to shave the neck down!

I think it might be better to fit a new neck, but it could be done. I will ask my luthier friends for you and come back with more information. Shine On Michael

Hi Michael, Sorry to be pest.
Just checking to see if you’ve had the chance to ask any of your Luthier friends about my question?
I’d probably want about 3mm added, a boat shape like an NRP or whatever spec a vintage spider bridge resonator should have.
Regards Chris

Regards Chris ‘I love slide me’ Hi Chris, I did ask, but forgot to let you know. Oops...my apologies. It is possible, but is not advisable as it is a big job. To do it properly you would have to completely rebuild the neck and therefore it might be easier and better to just build a new neck. I don't think I would do it to a guitar. Shine On Michael
