Brought back from a 17 year hibernation, PLAY THE BLUES is now available as individual tracks to download from my website. To begin with this is only being promoted on the forum, just to make sure it all works and to give forum members something that many of you have been asking about for a long time. PLAY THE BLUESEver wanted to play along with a world class blues band in the comfort of your own living room? With PLAY THE BLUES you can do just that! This exceptional & versatile set of tracks can be used for fun, for practice or as an aid for music teachers. Learn some words and a guitar part and entertain your friends, or just pick up your guitar and PLAY THE BLUES! Each of the 26 tracks has been recorded to sound like an authentic blues recording from its respective period in history. Authentic vintage instruments and recording techniques were used to really get that classic blues sound which so often gets lost in modern recordings. The music has been mixed in an intimate way to give you the feeling of being in the room with the band. Hi Michael, you haven't got the CD box set at the back of a cupboard somewhere have you?!😎👍 Hi Bonzo, Sadly not. This is the only way it will ever be available. You can download whichever tracks you want and then burn them to a CD, if that is how you like to use the tracks. Knowing you as I do, I think this one will be right up your street! Click on the link .... michaelmesser.co.uk/track/2412002/yardbird-sample...and this is a 30 second sample of the track without any lead guitar, so you can play along with it. The full length of that one, Yardbird, is 5 minuites. Loads of time to jam with it. michaelmesser.co.uk/track/2412004/yardbird-trackShine On Michael

Just listened to all the samples, very impressive. It’s the first time I have heard Ed’s electric guitar unleashed, wonderful ‘pre-Clapton’ phrasing’s and tone. In fact my only criticism would be on the track with a Brit-Blues flavour, the guitar was a bit more Albert Collins than Eric C, but this is a bit unfair as I only heard the sample. Pete

Thanks Pete. It was not recorded as an academic study. It was done in the spirit of different styles and musicians. We would listen to a recording of a particular artist, get the feel of the band and then play.
If you knew Ed you would know that he has never copied anyone's playing in whole life, he would not be able to. (I say that as the highest form of compliment) Ed Genis is an unsung master and this, in my opinion, more than anything else we recorded together, shows exactly that.
Most of the lead and slide guitar solos were done as overdubs because we needed the rhythm tracks to be free of any clutter. If you hear lead, slide, or piano soloing in the long backing tracks, it is because that was what went down live at the time to create the feel and vibe of the music. Playing a rhythm track with no vocals or melody lines for five to ten minutes just becomes wooden and boring. As I say, this was really not an academic study, and that was actually the whole point of the project. You can't play music unless you actually play.
Thanks, your compliment is much appreciated.

Thank you, Harriet! Let us know how you get on with the tracks that you downloaded. I am sure other forumites will be interested. Shine On Michael Hi Michael, I've jammed with rhythm, percussion tracks but not with a full band tracks. I'm working with the ones I've downloaded in three ways at this point. Some I downloaded to take a closer look at the ideas used in the leads, some had slide so those I downloaded to see if I could learn or duplicate the slide part, and some I wanted to try and develop a lead for. Managed to score cd's off bod who wasn't using them. (Small donation will be forwarded). Have just spent an hour up in the shed convincing myself I'm an ace guitarist! I've mentioned before that I have no one to play along with and these cd's really do make you feel like you're part of a band. I play slide pretty much all the time and had no problem sliding and picking along with all the tracks I tried. Anyone not sure how they feel about the concept should definitely download a few tracks. Found them very helpful and fun to play along with.
Best wishes to you all, John

Michael, have you ever thought about doing a country blues versions of Play the Blues? There is a shortage of good quality country blues jam tracks on the market.

Have you crashed your server with the downloads Michael? 500 all the way. Thanks Bob. I am pleased that I am testing it on here, because this morning only 20 of the 52 tracks are showing. Can anybody explain why that might be? It was working fine when I set it up. I have just written to my website host company to ask their advice. Shine On Michael
