I've got a '73 Fender Twin reverb, I was looking at swapping it out for a Music Man 112 RP Sixty Five, would I be level trading there or is the Music Man a bit of a downgrade?, I'm wanting a smaller clean amp because the twin is such a beast to move around!

If you can find a Matamp First Lady combo (12") all your problems would be solved.

Amps are very subjective and it is a very big ocean of choice, I have two or three valve amps but still have Gas for more, my current interest in terms of what it can do, value for money and you mention clean headroom is the Orange Tremlord.
Just one suggestion, I also have a custom Princeton and am the custodian of a couple of SJB Audios (don't worry knowbody remembers them).
Regards
Lee

Hi there !
I remember the SJB Audio amps !
I bought one in the mid 1990's as a Uni student. I bought the twin 6V6 Ant model.
My harmonica playing bandmate played it most of the time - and when I finished Uni, I let him keep it. Gigged with him for 10yrs then he messed me around. 9 weeks before getting married, my then fiance called everything off and shacked up with him ! Never could bring myself to contact him and demand my amp back ! That's 17yrs back now and the only thing that still hurts,is missing the amp !
What SJB amps you got ?

Plus, I remember the English guitarist, Paul Judge, (think his name is) having the Hornet model, he played it with a lovely Beltona Tricone, burchered with a humbucker built into it. I suppose it was maybe built to have the humbucker.

Hi again,
What are the valves in each amp ?
I forget much bout what spec my Ant had, except mine had that lovely burgundy tolex, 6V6 output valves, and a Fane 12" speaker. If you ever want to sell either ................ !

In the 70s I had an Orange 100watt combo, then a series of old 2x6L6 Fenders. Eventually I started using a Watkins Dominator (2xEL84s). Each time was a step down in power and (for me ) an improved tone. Unless you are playing a stadium 50-100watt amps will rarely be turned up to halfway . If you want clean power there are quite a few solid state amps out there that will give it to you, if you want valve tones then a small amp and a mic into the PA could be the best way forward. Pete
I now use a home made amp with 2x 6V6s in parallel, and sometimes a Fender Princeton if I want Reverb,

Hi again ! I'm currently loving my latest vintage amp - a Lectrolab R600 Twin 6V6 output valves, with octal preamp tubes - sounds great for guitar AND with a high-impedance vocal mic plugged in : Attachments:

Hi again,
Then again, Award-Session have just brought out a solid-state clone of the Fender 5E3 amp.

but from what I have been able to try, good advice about Push-Pull 6V6 circuits above.
in a venue with a PA system MM's liking for single ended 6V6 is worth exploring also. he champions champs with good cause. think EC's studio version of "Layla" solo. have read that the 12 string sounding solo in "nowhere man" was John and George playing strats into champs, likely along with massive amounts of compression.
class A single ended circuits run output tube at full voltage constantly resulting in cranked-up tube "swirl" even at low [clean] volumes.
they also do not cancel out even order harmonics like P-P circuits.
hope this helped, mitchfit

Alex, if you like how a Fender Twin sounds why don't you swap it for a smaller Fender, so to retain his basic sound? A DeLuxe Reverb, for example. As much as I like smaller amps for that 50s Chicago blues sound, I also like a bigger clean sound. And that's for Fenders are for.
(I drag around a Twin for 20 years, so I know what you feel, eheh! Then I switched to a Super Reverb, which is even worse, or a Gibson Goldtone, slightly lighter). Frank

Music Man 112 RP Sixty Five are the best amp on earth! Had one in the 80', just sold it cause it was too heavy. Just the best of the best! The guy (Cyril Lefebvre bandmate whom I sold it , just regret to sold it again after 30 years!)
